Great Expectations
Great Expectations
She has crores worth stocks and bonds
Diamond jewelry a list long
Plush homes, economically strong
But to no one belongs
Children have eons gone
Near and dear ones don't correspond
No one to share the festivities
Diyas are now no more lit
House wears a look forlorn
Waits eagerly for their phone calls
When it doesn't ring blames
It to the different time zones
They are busy climbing career ladders
Lost touch with customs brought up
Diwali now means nothing at all
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
Has become the norm
To be accepted by neighbors next door
She's amazed how loyalties have changed
However much they try, cannot feign
Apparent in their attitude, turned vain
Living on a more developed continent
Rest of the world looks down with disdain
Own country, own home don't acknowledge
She cannot unscramble a scrambled egg
She cannot bring back her children
She has just one life to live
Decided will donate her assets
To the Children's Cancer hospital
And see the look of surprise on their faces
When they arrive at her funeral with great expectations!
