I may be known as the father of the nation,

But in the end, I too was a human.

I went to England in order to study,

But denied my son, the same opportunity.

I campaigned in South Africa on behalf of the Indians,

But regarded as inferior, the native Africans.

I invigorated the masses and launched the Non-cooperation Movement,

But called it off in 1922 due to a single incident.

I led the Dandi March and spearheaded the Civil Disobedience Movement,

But by signing the pact with Lord Irwin, I may have signed Bhagat Singh's death warrant.

I believed that Indian villages and cottage industries should be the backbone of the nation,

But failed to realize the importance of modern enterprise and industrialisation.

I was an apostle of Ahimsa and Satyagraha, the means with which British rule we should oppose,

But could not get along with radical revolutionaries such as Subhash Chandra Bose.

I worked for the upliftment of the backward classes, just like Babasaheb Ambedkar,

But for some reasons could not see eye-to-eye with him and we could not work together.

I had the best intention when I mixed politics and religion,

But in some ways it might have led to India's partition.

I experimented with Brahmacharya, and abstained from sex, liquor, and a non-vegetarian diet.

But carried it too far when to test my resilience, I disrobed and slept with my grandnieces at night.

I may be known as the father of the nation,

But in the end, I too was a human.

"Our flaws are what make us human. If we can accept them as a part of who we are, they really don't even have to be an issue." - Ellen Degeneres
