A Prisoner of Doubt

Taken captive in its own abode,

The mind wanders, helpless and alone,

Not realizing that that it is reaping the fruits,

Of the seeds which it itself had sown.

An unguarded prison with no walls or cells,

But to escape from it is no mean feat,

For no sooner is one trapped within,

Hopes start to fall, accepting defeat.

Towards liberty lie a myriad roads,

But shackled as it is by feelings of doubt,

A confused mind is unable to decide,

Which one to choose, how to go about.

Should I take the road less travelled?

Or should I tread the beaten track?

Will I get lost or reach my destination?

Or go around in circles or simply come back?

With each passing moment of uncertainty,

Imaginary ropes encircle and tighten,

Around a restless mind as it watches,

Freedom fade away into the horizon.

Once a ruler, today a prisoner,

Of itself; accepting its fate, the mind sits still,

Having ignored all along the old adage,

That doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.
