The race called Life

Many years ago, when I was very naive ,

And believed everything that I was told,

I used to think that I should work hard now,

So that I can enjoy life when I’m old.

In school I had very few friends,

My companions were by and large books,

Doing my homework and studying for exams,

Towards sports and extracurriculars, I would barely look.

Then one fine day, it was time,

The dreaded 10th standard board exams arrived,

To pass them with flying colors,

I zealously strived.

At last having matriculated,

The first hurdle had been overcome,

But there was no time to rejoice and celebrate,

For several more were about to come.

Burning the midnight oil on a regular basis,

To study for the 12th Boards and competitive examinations,

Our rank and percentage would ultimately determine,

Whether in our desired institution we get admission.

Having somehow secured a seat in a college,

But still there was no time to sit and enjoy,

Because it is by looking at our marksheet,

In the final year, recruiters would employ.

Finally, I completed my education and got myself a job,

Where I work the entire day,

The thought persists whether in this race,

I let my entire life slip away.

“It is the final lap; after this you can relax”,

At every major juncture, was the refrain,

But no sooner was the race completed,

“On your marks, get set, here we go again.”

Responsibilities will never end,

Of life, they are a part and parcel,

But don’t let them be the cause of regret when you sit,

In the departure lounge of God’s airport, waiting for your flight’s arrival.

Take some time out for yourself,

Enjoy your life while you still can,

How right was John Lennon when he said,

“Life is what happens when your busy making other plans.”

“Life is like an ice cream. Enjoy it before it melts”.
