Sita Baba

Sita Baba

There was an old man in my village who used to take care of our fields. Ploughing the fields was his major role and he used to do it with full commitment and dedication. His name was Sita. We called him Sita Baba out of respect. He was so perfect in his task that he had complete knowledge of agriculture-related activities. He knew about the crop quality, he knew the best season for a crop to cultivate, and he was aware of the kind of manure and fertilizer necessary for the well-being of the crops. My grandfather had blind faith in Sita Baba and yes, he was really a thorough gentleman.

He was actually like a family member. I still remember that as a child he used to play with us a lot, he used to tell us many stories of fairies and monsters, took care of us like our parents and even if there was some serious issue, he used to guide us like a philosopher. Of course, he was a learned personality, no doubt. Along with agricultural activities he was having enough knowledge of current politics, social issues, general knowledge and much more. And I must say that he was fond of children. Whenever he used to come to our home in the village after a long toiling in fields, we used to rush toward him asking him to play with us and recite our stories. My mother often scolded me, "Stop it all of you. Can't you see baba is so tired? Let him take rest." But every time he used to say, "Please let them play with me. You see, all my tiredness is gone after spending a few moments with these kids."

Everyone in my family respected Sita Baba deeply. My mom and dad never said "no" to him for any request or suggestion of his. His opinion was a priority for my entire family. And certainly, he has gained that reputation in my family by sheer hard work and nothing else.

Once it was very bad weather. Sita Baba was ploughing the fields. It looked like it will never stop raining. Dark clouds covered the entire village. Everyone hid in the comfort of their homes. It was getting darker and he has still not come from the fields. All my family members were worried and praying for his well-being. Due to the non-availability of mobile phones during those days, nobody was able to contact him in any way, which further made everybody's heart beat faster. My mother was praying for well being of Sita Baba. With one eye on the road towards our fields, all my family members were waiting for him

Suddenly from far away, it appeared as if some tall man is coming towards our home with a hoe on his shoulders. His face was not clearly visible due to the rain. We were desperately looking at him as if we were searching for someone in his face. As he approached nearer, I shouted, "Mom, It's Sita Baba". Everyone rushed to see him as if all of them has found a lost treasure. "Sita, where were you? We were so worried about you. It's raining like cats and dogs. Are you alright?". Sita baba just smiled and said, "There is nothing to worry about 'bahu rani'This rain is divine. We are going to have a rich harvest this season. Now come on give me something to eat. Today it was really hectic. Children, come with me. Let me tell you a fairy tale today." And all the kids of the family sat around Sita Baba and he started telling us great stories. My mom and dad smiled and with tears of happiness in their eyes, went back to their work.

This was Sita Baba, a true inspiration, a real hero. Unfortunately today he is not with us but his blessings will always be with us throughout our lives. Miss you Baba.....
