Tomorrow

You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today. This statement is very apt pertaining to our present condition. 

Shalini worked in a multi national company and was apprehensive about the present scenario of the world. She felt that the world needed a serious change in order to have a better tomorrow. The long shadows of the evening ceased into the accumulating darkness of the night time. Shalini slept after thinking about the situations that were prevalent throughout the world. She had a dream and her dream was very much connected with reality. 

In her dream, she saw the global warming scenario. Global warming is a long term rise in the mean temperature of the earth’s climate system. It is an aspect of climate change shown by temperature measurements and by numerous effects of the warming. The effects of global warming are vast and they have an adverse impact on living beings. It has caused melting of glaciers, rise in sea level, changes in the timing of seasonal events and spoiled agricultural productivity. To some extent, people are responsible for this harmful phenomenon. Humans must live with nature and not against it, in this way there will be a balance in the environment tomorrow. 

Next came the scenario of digitalization. Digitalization is very beneficial to humans and it has made our life easy. It has revolutionized every aspect of our daily life. We do not need to travel long distances, do not have to wait in queues and get everything quickly. But it also has some disadvantages associated with it. Excess use of digital technology causes data security issues, complexity of gadgets, concern of people regarding privacy, overload of data, manipulation of digital media and over-reliance on gadgets. Anything is a virtue when it is used in limits but it turns into a vice when limit is crossed. Digitalization has brought about a drastic change in human life by making life easier but it has created a disconnect among people. People must control the use of digital technology, else there will be robots instead of humans tomorrow.

Then came the scenario of socialization. Socialization is the activity of mixing socially with others and it is basically face to face interaction. Nowadays there is an increasing tendency for people to communicate and socialize through digital devices rather than through real life contact. This can lead to social disconnect and isolation. People do not interact with the person sitting next to them but they communicate with distant people through social media. Human beings have evolved over thousands of years to have real contact, so that should be retained. Lack of real-life contact may cause depression in people. If human beings do not realise the importance of face to face interaction, then society will be depersonalized tomorrow. 

After that came the scenario of unemployment. With the rise in automation, there is a threat of unemployment. Artificial Intelligence will replace humans and unemployment will rise. This condition is more prevalent in software industries where the mundane jobs are being automated. There are certain activities carried out by employees almost everyday and they are monotonous. Automation aims to reduce this repeated work by using algorithms and it increases productivity of an organization. But it decreases the workforce of a company as there is no need of many people to carry out similar kind of activities. Organizations need to understand that there is no replacement for human beings and automation should be used to achieve higher growth. If companies fail to understand this, then there will be unemployment tomorrow. 

Shedding herself of the glimpses of her dream, Shalini woke up and realised that she had a nightmare. She was relieved thinking that the world has still not changed completely. There is time and opportunity for people to make a better tomorrow. She recollected some evidences where global warming, digitalization, socialization and unemployment had not harmed people. It is the duty of all individuals to work for a better tomorrow where human beings will be in harmony with each other and also with nature. The best preparation for tomorrow can be done by doing the best in the present situation.
