Disclaimer: It is a fiction short Greek story

In the early centuries, when Greece was not yet popular, a young girl Haydee lived in one of the remote forested areas. She was a beautiful young maiden with wild imagination and thoughts.

But the sad part is, her parents had passed away when she was just 2 years old. She was taken under the care of her uncle who was then a dreaded gangster who robbed people.

After receiving Haydee in his life, he decided to mend his ways and changed for her sake. But his past criminal records had always affected Haydee’s dreams.

Haydee had a hidden dream. Her dream was to fly high in the sky like a bird. No airplane, no helicopters. Just like a bird with its wings.

She knew it was impossible. But still, no harm in dreaming, she thought.

Her uncle always struggled in making her join school. She was an excellent learner, a quick one, a smart one, but, as usual, his criminal records turned out to be the reason.

Haydee had a best friend. Yes, it was her secret diary, Acanthus. She always shared her feelings with him. She would start with ‘Dear Acanthus,’ and start off writing.

Her diary was a loyal one. She never allowed him the permission to pour out her feelings to others.

One day, she went to a nearby temple, The Temple of Dreams, or, Morpheus’s Abode. Her uncle took her to his room and prayed deep from his heart.

Just then, Haydee as usual, decided to sight-see the temple. She moved around the different temple-memorials, and viewed the different credits given to each Greek god. Each memorial had its own name named after its god.

Her uncle, soon realized that Haydee was missing. He searched around but couldn’t find her.

“Oh, where will I look for her now!? Why are you testing me so much my lords! Oh, Haydee where are you!” screamed her uncle.

Suddenly, he heard some screams,

“Uncle, Uncle! Look! I found something! What is it!?” yelled Haydee.

The uncle followed the scream. He found her among the river banks, amidst a pile of……something.

“Well, you found wax. Solid one. I guess Morpheus has fulfilled your dream Haydee!” said the uncle.

“How on Earth will we ever fly with wax uncle?” Haydee chuckled over her uncle’s peculiar thought.

“Wait and See.” Convinced her uncle.

The uncle started to work. After several hours of work and struggle, he made 2 pairs of beautiful wings.

“WOW! IS MY DREAM GOING TO COME TRUE?!” asked Haydee.

“Look Haydee, Wax is light and you can easily fly with it! But be wary not to fly to close to the sun, the wax will melt!” warned he.

“Eh, sure uncle!” Haydee was just too excited!

She took her pair and buckled up. She fluttered her wings and within few minutes, she was floating in the air, and within seconds, high up in the air, as she always dreamed!

“Un, Un, Uncle! I am flying! I am flying!” Screamed Haydee out of joy!

“That’s it my little precious! Make your dream a reality!” Tears of glee filled his eyes.

But this happy moment didn’t triumph. Haydee was too enthusiastic that she flied close to the sun’s rays

“Uh, Haydee! Don’t go too close to the sun!” yelled the uncle.

“Uh, Uncle, I can’t hear you! Can you shout a bit loud!” yelled Haydee back.

“Oh, my beautiful pearl! Don’t fly too close…”

Suddenly, he shuddered. It was of utter futility! The wax started to melt. Haydee was scared.

“Uncle, Uncle, save me! I am falling!” she screamed.

“SORRY! I AM SORRY HAYDEE! NOTHING CAN SAVE YOU!” he lied by the shore and sobbed.

“But you said you will always be there for me, at times of trouble and happiness! You promised!” yelled Haydee

“Not this time, my precious bun! Not this time. Forgive me.”

Haydee now realized she could not rely on her uncle. She was now close to the river waves. She laid back, closed her eyes, and fell to the river, with a splash. She was at least happy that her dream got fulfilled.

The uncle went back home, weeping over the loss of his morsel of happiness. He never did anything intentionally. But the loss of Haydee haunted him, and he decided to end his life.

The next day’s newspapers arrived at each locality.

“The Greek Times
