MOTU AND THE GUAVA TREE

One day, Motu a 10 year old girl was walking in her garden, sadly, talking to herself and to the trees in the garden. She loved to talk to the trees when she was upset. While she was crossing the Guava tree, she heard someone was calling her. She turned to the side but nobody was there. She wondered and went away. She heard the voice again and returned to that place.

To her amazement it was the guava tree that called her name. She went near the tree and asked in surprise, “Did you call me, can you talk like us?”

“Yes”, replied the guava tree.

Motu asked the reason for calling her. The tree asked her to sit under the tree and then it started sharing her feelings with Motu.

The tree told her, “Your grandmother planted me here some two decades ago. She loved nurturing plants and trees.

Every day, as soon as she woke up, she would come to the backyard and greet us. We would become cheerful on seeing her smile. She had a mesmerising voice and would sing songs on our request.

She was the only person in the house who could understand our language. Every night, she would share with us the incidents that happened the whole day and then go to sleep. The garden was filled with her spirit that made us to yield more fruits, vegetables and spellbind the garden with incomparable fragrances. Neighbours would come to the garden to see the magic.

One day, in the evening, we were waiting for her songs but she didn't turn up. We worried about her. In the night, we came to know that we couldn't see or listen her songs anymore. We worried much on hearing the news.

Your family members were talking about her funeral rites and decided to bury her in the garden itself on her request before she took her last breath. We felt honoured on hearing it. We paid our tribute by showering flowers and fruits on her memorial. She was the only soul in this house who could hear our vocal and looked after us as her children. We were in the irreversible grief for years.

After you born, we felt delighted on seeing you. Because you resembled your grandmother. You grew up as an angel of this house. Your mother would feed food to you by showing us. We felt happy as if your grandmother was talking when you were chatting with us.

Motu was in a state of amazement when the guava tree was talking with her. The tree told her, “For the past two years, we stopped giving fruits. So, your parents decided to cut us down and build a guest house here. We were not worrying about us as we lived our life to the fullest. But we were worrying about our tiny friends- birds and squirrels who were living their life depending on us."

They could not get food anywhere in your locality other than your garden. The tree placed a request to Motu to talk to her parents about planting more trees to save its little friends.

Motu agreed the tree's request and shared about tree's request with her parents. They got surprised on listening about it and changed their mind. The Guava tree was happy on hearing it from Motu.
