Guru Nanak Dev Ji traveled all over India to preach the teachings of God and traveled whole distances on foot. His companions Bala Ji and Mardana Ji always traveled with him. Once they reached a remote part of India named Kamrup where the people were famous for black magic. When Guru Nanak Dev Ji reached the outskirts of the city he sat down under a tree and began meditation. Bala Ji stayed with him and Mardana Ji went to the city to find food and water.

Mardana Ji found the city well and filled his water containers. Meanwhile some girls saw him and started enquiring about him.But when he answered they thought him to be funny as he spoke a different language. One of them said that he sounded just like a sheep and he was bleating like a sheep!

They both laughed and the other said that let them turn him into a sheep. Saying so she performed a magic spell on him by putting a thread around his neck. He immediately got on all fours and started bleating, "Baaah, baah, baah." Other people who were watching became amused and started laughing.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji sensed something was wrong and Bala Ji and he started walking towards the city. The girls saw them coming and decided to turn them into animals too. One of them tried to cast a spell on Guru Nanak Dev Ji.She wanted the visitors to bark like dogs, but it did nothing to Guru Ji.

Instead, the spell was reversed and the girl who had wished so, started barking like a dog herself. The other girl tried to help her friend and raised her arm to cast a different spell, but her arm just froze in the air and she became stagnant. The girls tried several other spells and whatever they tried to do was reversed on them!

A woman watching all this, ran up to the Queen of Kamrup to tell her about the happenings. The Queen was a powerful magician herself. She came to the spot where Guru Ji was there. She was amazed to find that her sisters' magic had been totally blocked.

She tried to do magic but even her magic was of no use! Her magic against Guru Nanak Dev Ji didnot work at all. Finally, she gave up and told Guru Ji that he must be a great magician!

She then pleaded to free her sisters and to teach her magic!

Guru Nanak Dev Ji freed the girls at once. He explained that actually they were just bound by the effects of their own magic. Guru Ji then said that the real magic is meditation on God!

The Queen of Kamrup fell at Guru Ji's feet and asked him to stay for some more time sothat they could honorably serve him.

He told them that he would stay and said that they had used their powers for mischief. They had not helped people. He asked them to stop tricking people and to start protecting them instead. He wanted them to do their duties in a good manner .By helping people they would be glorified and their souls will get enlightened. From then on the women became kind and benevolent and the city of Kamrup became a spiritual center where people were compassionate and helpful!
