A Winter Night

Jadhav looked at the sky and wondered whether he would get through the night. It was unbearably cold, as snow flakes landed all over the place covering the land in a shimmering white coat. He shivered. There was not a single person around as far as his eyes could see. Understandably everyone seemed to have closeted themselves in the comfort of their houses. But, Jadhav had nowhere to go. Just then, he saw orange flames flickering at a distance, as if from a bonfire. He rushed forward in the hope of getting some warmth on his shivering body. An old woman was sitting beside some bricks arranged in a square and an ignited sack of husk and paper placed in the middle. The flames from the sack darted up providing her with the warmth that was so essential for her to survive. When she saw the little boy, she smiled and invited him to partake of that warmth. She offered him some rotis which she had cooked over the fire. Jadhav was overwhelmed by the affection shown by the woman to a stranger. Though he was all of ten, never had he come across such a magnanimous gesture. The happiness that bloomed on his face and the fleeting expression of gratitude gave the woman the satisfaction of serving her own child who was no more.
