Two Steps Back, One Step Forward

Two Steps Back, One Step Forward

We smiled like strangers at the station that night,
Two souls pretending everything was alright.
Your train disappeared with the sound of the rain,
And I held goodbye like a bruise full of pain.

Before that, we danced through our final fight,
Throwing sharp little words beneath dim yellow light.
You said love grows tired when silence stays loud,
I laughed through my tears while losing you proud.

Earlier still, we were tangled in spring,
Sharing cheap coffee and everything.
You traced little galaxies into my hand,
And promised forever without understanding the demand.

Before promises cracked under life’s heavy weather,
We dreamed of small houses and old age together.
You kissed my forehead in streets washed with gold,
Making ordinary evenings feel fearless and bold.

Further back, there were unanswered calls,
Moments of doubt hidden behind fragile walls.
I took two steps back whenever you came near,
Afraid love itself was another word for fear.

And before fear learned how to quietly stay,
You met me beneath skies drowning into gray.
A stranger with kind eyes and trembling grace,
Who smiled as the wind kept touching my face.

At the very beginning—before heartbreak, before goodbye,
Before learning that even true love can die—
You asked, “Can I walk with you for a while?”
And my whole world began
With a smile.
