To Empathize

Someone you've known for some time,

One who became a friend,

At one point this person seemed fine,

But then your perceptions prove wrong in the end 

As they begin to act as they never have before,

Maybe they're not as social as in the past,

Or maybe they don't confide in you anymore,

Whatever the case you notice the contrast. 

How do you choose to react?

Do you show an ounce of concern?

Or are you encouraging every sort of attack,

Because you felt it was earned?

When someone has truly crossed a line,

Do you turn a blind eye?

Or is there a solution you intend to find,

As the odds, you try to defy?

If you find yourself in these scenarios,

Then there is a balance you must strike,

that doesn't mean everything to the wind you throw,

Just because this individual you like. 

There will be times when your hands will be tied,

As the temptation to stop crashes into you,

But remember this before you decide,

There is still one thing you can do. 

Whether they care or not try to be there,

And remember if you can't choose a side,

Don't see it as a burden you must bear,

As a hopeful outlook is the best service to provide
