The Trauma Of A Free Bird

The Trauma Of A Free Bird

When one is trapped inside the closet,

Like a caged bird, the stress is high,

Locked behind an iron door,

But the keys are with that person.

When the bird is freed from its cage,

When the door is unlocked,

One expects freedom but

Is in for a rude shock.

Shunned by one's family, friends, society,

Being bullied, harassed and shamed,

Homosexuality is regarded as a disease, a sin

By the non-progressive homophobic society,

Trapped in false preconceived notions.

Wish that everyone understands that

"Love is love" extending across all barriers.

Family members are shocked to the core,

The individual being hurled with abuse

Physical, mental and verbal.

Broke their expectations and their ambitions

They said, little did they know that

Their loved one is going through a tough time,

Unable to come out to loved and dear ones,

Struggling to accept one's sexual orientation,

It's a feeling of internalised homophobia.

All that the individual asked for

Was to accept one the way one is.

Scared of being put under conversion therapy,

Being abused by the society.

One wishes one could shout aloud

That one isn't influenced by novels or movies,

It's natural, an unexplainable phenomenon.

How one wishes everyone could coexist,

And not lead a pretentious life,

For one has only one life to shine bright,

How one wishes there was no discrimination,

A fear dawns upon that one person,

The fear of being physically harassed,

The fear of being stereotyped,

The fear of losing the bond with the loved ones,

The fear of being homeless,

The fear of being discriminated against,

The fear of being treated as a laughing stock,

The fear of not being able to marry the loved one,

The fear of not being able to stand for each other,

How one wishes there was peace and harmony,

Society should be completely supportive.
