The Strenuous Lane To Our Supreme Law

The supreme law of the country,

Determining the people and the government’s relations,

Specifying how the government would be constituted,

And generating a degree of trust and coordination.

Laying limitations to the powers we can have,

And expressing our thoughts and aspiration,

The thing which I want to mention here is,

Is none other than the constitution of our nation?

Our constitution is the longest in the world to be written by hand.

And it was drawn up under very difficult circumstances,

Which were as good as being in quicksand.

Drafting a constitution for a country as huge and diverse as India,

Was not at all an easy affair.

The future of the country didn’t seem to be quite secure,

Which filled the hearts of the Constitution makers with anxiety, concern and care.

There was the traumatic experience of the partition.

As 10 lakh people died in the violence.

And the merger of the princely states with India or Pakistan,

Was a task that was uncertain in sense.

However, this stem did have roses,

And not just the thorns.

The constitution makers had a few advantages too.

Despite all the cons.

There were references such as the draft Constitution by Motilal Nehru,

That was far back in 1928.

And resolution at the INC’s Karachi session presented some basic values that were accepted by all,

So, on this, there was not too much to deliberate.

A helping factor in the development of our institutional design,

Was the familiarity with the political institutions of colonial rule.

And the ideals of the French Revolution and the socialist revolution in Russia,

Also acted as an Inspirational tool.

However, inculcating these ideals and values in our Constitution,

And checking whether our country’s structure suits,

Was something commendable done by those masterminds,

For which they undoubtedly deserve a great tribute.

Thus, it's important to understand,

In our life, the roles these ideals play, 

And celebrate with full zeal and zest,

This 73rd Republic Day!
