The Origin Of Earthquakes

The Origin Of Earthquakes

Bright moonlight flooded the harrowing meadows in Western Uganda, these are places when the mystical drums sound every night at the stroke of midnight. These trim, green meadows are where all humanity had begun, it's the Olduvai gorge of Africa,

Legends have it that King Nyamyonga was the demigod of the Underworld in Africa, and a brother of Thanatos, the Greek Underworld King who ruled the Mediterranean sea and lands beyond. King Nyamyonga had imprisoned his son, Walumbe below Lake Albert after the son's ferocious attacks on humans and their animals,

Walumbe also referred to as Death, had caused many wars, diseases, mistrust, and destruction to the humans who ruled our world. He loathed their pride, he wanted to marry their daughters but they were terrified of him,

Walumbe was also a demigod, and such union with humans could bring calamities and the extinction of the human race.

Every night, the humans locked away their ebony, slender, and beautiful daughters in the kraals where the cows slept. They built fires to scare him off, for he lived in the darkness. They denied the Underworld's only child a chance to settle among them. This was their undoing and a recipe for disaster,

Every new moonlight, Walumbe returned to the earth and squeezed his long, slippery tentacles into their kraals to seek out a girl of his choice,

But instead, the humans threw fireballs and chased him away. He wandered the lands seeking solace but found none,

Now, Walumbe plotted revenge against humanity. He summoned his fiery henchmen from the Underworld and sent them to the far-away lands and seas to stir trouble. But King Nyamyonga warned his only son about his downfall and the repercussions of his plots,

Walumbe didn't listen, he was consumed with hate and rage. He sent the Harmattan winds laden with the desert locusts which consumed every vegetation but the humans persisted,

He walked to the rivers and lakes, and stirred them up, sending floods into the plains and valleys, causing death to the humans,

Then, he sent the volcanic eruptions which spewed fire and ash. He watched exalted as the humans' dwellings burnt, including their children and animals,

The humans' cries of distress fell on Walumbe's deaf ears. He blew more Sahara dry winds from the North into their lands and caused famine and hunger. The men cried out and offered sacrifices to the King of the Underworld,

King Nyamyonga had heard the men lamenting about his son's revenge. As a demigod, he felt their pains and sorrows. He summoned Walumbe, his only son to stop his revenge, but he knew his fate,

Walumbe flew with his Underworld henchmen and hid in Ttanda caves, a far-away place hidden near the Equator, a place of lost souls where the undead live, a place where witches and wizards gather and dance around the evening fires till the wee hours of the morning, casting spells, and buying souls to do their bidding,

The Underworld King flew stealthily in the dark silvery clouds and descended upon his sleeping and unsuspecting son. He carried him back to the Underworld. When Walumbe woke up, he had been chained to the walls of hell for eternity,

For 10,000 years, Walumbe has tempted to break free of his chains, and every time he fails miserably. Whenever he cries, he bellows fire into the Underworld, releasing tremours that cause the devastations in form of earthquakes all over the world,

Every minute, Walumbe breathes in anguish, he sets off the earthquakes that pass around the globe, causing volcanic eruptions, tsunami, and monsoon storms.
