The Night After Diwali
The Night After Diwali
A wheezing sound,
And the stars scattered across the sky.
My little brother's longing stare,
Follows them back to the earth.
The night after Diwali,
But Bony and Neha and Shinnu,
Still won't let barren the sky.
They light up their crackers,
Dance and rejoice;
As the fire engulfs their parent's money,
And burps with a defening sound.
Well, as for me and my brother,
We don't like to brag too long,
So, we quickly burned through,
Our father's labour and toil,
On the annual commemoration of,
The Eve of "Everything's up in smoke!!"
My little munchkin of a brother,
Sits with his face drawn long,
Burdening his tiny palms,
With guilt and greed overdrawn.
My eyes scan through the littered ground,
When it stumbled upon treasured gold.
I pick up the unburned cracker,
And hand it over to my little heart.
His eyes light up,
Like the twinkling lights around.
The exploding boom of the cracker,
His musical sound.
He puts his arms around my waist,
Looks up grinning and says,
"Didi, now let's go home!!"
