Return To The Village
Return To The Village
"Oh no !" I exclaimed, when told of our holiday
to our hometown, unwilling to go, come what may.
Brought up in Mumbai, with its urban attractions,
A snob at fifteen, with not much common sense ...
I turned up my nose at this visit to the country,
This excursion to my village was not for me.
The hills and vales, the beauty of the landscape
passing past the train window as I just did gape,
put me in quieter, more peaceful and pensive mood -
My parents cautioned me too not to be rude...
As we alighted to a warm welcome from our kin
who seemed not to notice the morose mood I was in.
Simple and unaffected folk they were, with
a lot of genuine affection for us, as amidst
them we had a healthy, home- cooked meal,
We couldn't have asked for a better deal ;
My friendly cousins just made the days fly by
with their company, my spirits soared to a high.
The slow and languorous pace of rural life,
Unlike the city's hustle and bustle, stress and strife
made me so sorry when we had to leave...
On this return to my roots, I came to
believe
that heritage and culture will always persist
in human psyches, my village will be sorely missed.
