Amidst the Shadows

A constant thrum up there,

But I can’t shut it down.

Lyrics overlapping to form blurs,

And I can’t sort them out.

So many doors to step through,

But I only have one soul.

It would be so easy to be unseen;

No flags, but more than one goal.

A deep, dark pit to fall into,

Timeless - I can lay

If this is bliss; oblivion,

Please, let me stay.

There is a shadow over my eyes.

Fight so strong, try so hard,

But it won’t lift, not at all,

Not until I let down my guard.

It takes a moment to shatter,

Those carefully constructed shields.

So many needles waiting,

To prick you when you are weak.

What of those who are surreal?

Floating as figments in my mind.

They slip away from between my fingers,

Making them so hard to find.

With every turn of the page,

I’m coming to a close.

I wish I could go back - 

I’m drowning in what I chose.

And one day I may burst.

Or maybe learn to swim.

Or shush it all up in my head,

To embrace the calm with a grin.
