The story of two colleagues

Characters: Jerry and Harold(Two colleagues in a company and friends), Mrs. Bramble(Harold’s mother), Mr. Bramble(Harold’s father), Mrs. Jenny(Jerry’s handicapped mother), Mr. William (Boss), Tia( Harold’s friend), and Inspector Boris and his assistant.

SCENE 1

(In the office)

Harold: Jerry, are you ready?

Jerry: For what?

Harold: You have forgotten. Mr. William has called us to his cabin.

Jerry: Yes; I am sorry. Let’s go. I would like you to go first.

Harold: It doesn’t matter, man! Whether a knife is dropped on a watermelon or a watermelon has been dropped on a knife; the result would be the melon being eaten.

Jerry: it’s not like that; you are my brother and I don’t think the superior should follow anyone.

Harold: OK, then follow me.

SCENE 2

(In the Cabin)

Harold: May we come in, Sir?

Mr. William: Of course.

Harold and Jerry (to the boss): Thanks, could we know the reason you have called us, Sir?

Mr. William: Yes, I want a machine to be built in front of eyes, which could show the IQ level of any person. I want you both to work on this project; the time period is 2 months. OK?

Jerry: No problem at all sir, your machine would be in front of your eyes within 2 months. Am I right, Harold?

Harold: Yes, Sir; this is our promise.

Mr. William: Ok, you both may go and continue with your work.

(They leave the Cabin)

Harold: Jerry, can you do this?

Jerry: Yes, I have studied engineering and I should be able to do this.

Harold: but, I don’t want to do this. Could you finish off the work and even include my name?

Jerry: If you aren’t interested, then Ok. I am ready to do this. You can relax.

Harold: Thanks a lot!

SCENE 3

(Harold departs for his home; parents coming into the picture.)

Harold: Mum, are you there?

Mrs. Bramble: What’s the matter, son?

Harold: For your information, I am gonna work a lot on a machine which can show the IQ level of any person.

Mrs. Bramble: Really! it’s great news. Could you do this?

Mr. Bramble: Harold’s mum, what question are you asking!, this is a walk in the park; our son can easily finish us. After all, he’s very hardworking and intelligent.

Harold: You are right, dad. You may know that my partner, Jerry, is very lazy to do it. He has left all the work on my shoulders.

Mrs. Bramble: What! Such a lazy colleague you have. I hope he realities his mistake as soon as possible.

Harold: I don’t think so! Anyway, I have to go lab now to start working.

Mr and Mrs. Bramble: Bye, lovely son.

SCENE 4

(Harold actually goes to a cinema hall where Tia is waiting)

Tia: Harold! I am here.

(Harold and Tia hug)

Harold: For how long, you have been waiting?

Tia: it’s been 45 minutes.

Harold: I am sorry, my love. Let’s go and enjoy

Tia: I have heard that you are gonna make a machine that can show the IQ level of any person! Is it true?

Harold: yes, I have finished some of the work and come here- Jerry‘s lazy to do work.

Tia: I am sorry to know that.

Harold: Never mind; let’s go and watch the movie.

(Harold and Tia, after watching the movie, eat dinner together. Harold returns home late. Jerry after working goes to his home and starts talking to his mother.)

Jerry: Mum, I am home.

Jenny: Where have you been?

Jerry: Me and Harold were working on a machine that could show the IQ level of any person.

Jenny: Ok, come and have some dinner. Then go to the bed; you must be very tired.

Jerry: A lot! Good night, I have to go to the lab again in the morning.

Jenny: Good night.

(Harold resumes to go somewhere out and eat , lying his parents and Tia; gets sick; Jerry resumes working on the machine.)

Mrs. Bramble: What has happened to you?

Harold: Mum, due to continuous working at the lab, I have got fever; Jerry is still not ready to help me.

Mrs. Bramble: This is bad! You take rest; resume working after a few days.

(After 1 month, the machine is prepared by Jerry- he and Harold go to the boss’ cabin)

Jerry: May we come in, Sir?

Mr. William: Yes, please come in.

Jerry: Sir, the machine is ready- me and Harold have worked a lot on this.

Harold: Yes, sir. Please check its functioning.

(Mr. William checks the machine.)

Mr. William: Wow!, the work is wonderful, well done!

Harold: Thank you sir!

Mr. William: Why are you saying thanks, Harold? I heard everything that day the conversation between you and Jerry. You had been enjoying and Jerry working. So, Jerry has been offered a promotion and salary raised twice.

Jerry: Thank you sir!

Mr. William: You both may leave the cabin now.

(Harold reaches his home)

Harold: Mum, this is unfair, the machine was built by me but the promotion has been offered to Jerry.

Mrs. Bramble: My son, don’t worry. I know that you have made that machine. God will give you a better fruit!

(Harold tells Tia the same thing.)

Tia: The Boss has told me the truth. So don’t lie to me anymore. I never expected this from you. Just don’t talk to me. I am leaving you forever. Goodbye.

(Harold gets depressed; but does not eat anything for 5 days. Meanwhile, inspector Boris finds the dead body of Jerry on an isolated road; upon seeing the ID, visits his home)

Jenny: What’s the matter, Inspector?

Boris: Ma’am, is he your son?

Jenny: Yes.

Boris: I am sorry to tell you that your son has been killed- we found his body on an isolated road.

Jenny: What! This is not possible.

(she starts crying; police request her to stop crying and give them some information.)

Boris: Ma’am, could you tell us the place where Harold used to work?

Jenny: ‘THE MACHINE EXPERTS’

(Police arrive at the office and meet Mr. William.)

Boris: Mr. William, your employee, Jerry has been killed.

Mr. William: What? When?

Boris: We saw his dead body this morning. Could you give some information about him?

Mr. William: Sir, Jerry was a simple, sweet, silent and hardworking boy. In fact, when I had given him and Harold the responsibility of making a machine, Jerry only finished it without the help of Harold?

Boris: Who is Harold? Where is he ?

Mr. William: Harold is his friend. But, complete opposite of Jerry. He hasn’t come to the office today. I suggest you to ask Harold about this. I can give you his address.

(Before the police went to Harold’s home, they had asked the people if they saw anything. A guy said that he had seen an old- tall man throwing something near an isolated place. Also, over the dead body, they got hand prints of the killer. They arrive at Harold’s residence.)

Boris: Is your name, Harold?

Harold: Yes, but why have you come here?

Boris(to Mr. Bramble): Sir, you have to come with us to the police station.

Mr. Bramble: Why?, I didn’t do anything.

Boris: Jerry is dead. We have information that you were seen throwing away his body.

Mr. Bramble: I agree to that, but it wasn’t me who killed him. I had gone to his house to talk to him regarding the matter between him and Harold.

Boris: Don’t lie. Mr. Harold, you too must come with us to the police station.

(At Police Station)

Mr. Bramble: I hid him because, somehow people would assume that I have killed him. I had seen him dead near the road, which goes to his house.

(Harold sweats and fears; police ask for his hand prints.)

Boris: Mr. Harold, we want to check your hand prints to verify the verdict given by William.

(Harold unwillingly and forcefully gives it.)

Assistant: Sir, the hand prints match with the killer’s one.

Boris: Are you sure?

Assistant: Yes sir.

Boris: This means that Harold has killed Jerry.

Harold: Yes sir, I have killed him!

(Boris slaps him; asks the reason and the procedure)

Harold: Sir, I wanted promotion because Tia’s father, whom I wanted to marry, wasn’t ready. He was a greedy one and wanted money. I was too greedy. The machine which was to be built was a very difficult task- so, Jerry did it. He got the promotion and also took away my love. I was very angry at him. So, yesterday night, I went to his home and called him. He came down, expecting to reunite. His mother was sleeping. After some talks, I took out my knife and killed him. Then, I threw his body near the public road but forgot to take the knife.

Mr. Bramble: I never thought that you would do this. I regarded you as a prodigy and you turned out to be a criminal.(He slaps him.)

(Harold gets imprisoned for 10 years for murder and his father, for 6 months. Because he didn’t inform the police and changing the evidence.)

Harold: I am sorry dad.

(Police go to Jerry’ s house and tell his mother the truth.)

Jenny: I never thought that Harold, my son’s friend would do that.(she starts crying.)

Boris: Please control ma’am, your son was a prodigy, you should be proud of him. I pray that no one’s innocence and simplicity should be exploited by the cruel and wicked brains. Please take care. Goodbye.

(The police leave. The court gives Rupees 1 lakh compensation to Jenny. She feels disappointed and helpless. She misses her son a lot- keeping his photo with herself at all times.)
