The Irony Of Love

I usually avoided the gaze of random strangers but when I saw your chocolate brown eyes, there was no turning back. The way you shined under the blazing sun; flipping your black hair you walked past me with a small smile from that moment I lived to catch glimpses of you. My heart fluttered when I heard your name while my breathing hitched when you stood in front of me. Usually, my witty remarks could be heard from a distance but I could only utter a word or two in front of you.

One day I mustered the courage to take the first step; I texted you. We talked every second of the day until our eyes fell asleep. From being in college together to partying during the weekends we did it all. Until the Prom came around; and my mind turned into a frenzy state. Replaying our conversations I barely slept at nights, in the mornings my mind created dreams of its own. The anticipation killed me as my anxiety grew. The day I lost all hope was when I saw you with a bouquet of roses. My heart fluttered with joy, a smile escaped my lips. Finally, my time had come, taking a deep breath I watched you with your charming smile as you walked towards me.

But in the midst of the corridor you went down one knee in front of her; the roses were given to her; she held your hand while I stood there blankly. My heart shattered into pieces, my inner voice screamed from inside, all my dreams were broken while all you heard was silence. The way she hugged you, I wanted to snatch her away from you and be in your arms instead. But I just stood there helpless with a throbbing pain in my heart. In that second a tear escaped my eyes when you looked at me with a confused expression. Without a word I turned around and walked away; because I loved you enough to let you go.
