The Fraud

“You have got a new mail.”

David saw the notification blink multiple times. He was not able to concentrate on his work due to these constant notification alerts. He got annoyed and decided to turn off the alert. Out of habit he mechanically opened the mailbox. What he saw threw him out of his trance at once! 

There were some 15 emails from the same sender. The subject of each email was the same, “I’m sorry.” He was not sure if this was some sort of spam. These days spammers have become smarter to choose catchy subjects. Anyways, as long as he does not open any link he should be safe. So he opened the mail on top of the stack. Here’s what it read.

“Dear David, Please don’t block my calls. Please pick them up. Love, Mia.” 

Three consecutive emails had the same content. The fourth one had some more text. 

“Dear David, I can explain everything to you. Please let's talk. I did not tell your wife about your relationship with Jenny. Someone else did. I will find out who it was. Please don’t be mad at me. Let us talk. Love you still, Mia.”

Now things were getting interesting. Who was this Mia? Why was she flooding him with emails? Perhaps he should find out from other emails. The girl seems to be loving a married guy who she knows is already in a relationship with another one! What a colourful character! He checked the email address of the sender. No, it did not ring any bell. He could not recollect any contact remotely near that email address. He started opening other emails. 

“Dear David, I have a lot of money with me. Please don’t be upset if your wife throws you out of your house. You can come and live with me. You don’t have to do any job. My dad has left a huge fortune for me. We can live our life happily. I will keep you happy. Please talk to me.” 

Now it was too much for him to handle. He could not stop himself from feeling jealous of this David guy. What a lucky man! He is working his ass off day and night with no lady love and this fellow is getting both with no effort! Just then he got another new mail. He quickly opened it.

“Dear David, This is my last email. If you don’t respond now, I will have no option but to believe that you do not want to continue anymore. Waiting eagerly in love, Mia.”

This was it. He must respond to save this David guy from a big misfortune. He opened the last mail and replied back.

“Dear Mia, I am not angry with you. My mobile is lost. Can you please call me on this number instead?” And he gave his number in the email. A minute after he sent the email he received a message on his mobile.

“Hello, I’m Mia”.

“Hi, I’m David”.

“Is it safe to talk? Is your wife around?”

“She is sleeping, we can chat.”

“Oh David, I missed you so much. I thought you were mad at me.”

“It's Ok, anyways it was not you who created the trouble right? BTW, don’t you feel jealous about my relationship with Jenny?”

“Come on, why should I? Past is past. It's already 5 years that you both have moved on. It does not bother me anymore. I am a bit jealous of your wife though.”

“Don’t worry, we can start a life together. I am anyways fed up with my wife. I have taken a new flat for us. Do you want to come down to my new flat tomorrow morning? We can talk about everything in detail.” 

“Of course, I can't wait to fly into your arms sweetheart. Just send me the location and I will be there.”

David sent her the location of his house and smiled. He looked into the mirror and gave a devilish smile. “Come sweetheart and meet your devil. Who will save you from me now? ha ha ha ha. Stupid woman. Hungry for love. I will cure your hunger forever, and release your burden of having too much money. All your money will be mine, mine…mine…ha ha ha ha.” He burst into devilish laughter. 

He cleaned the mess in his room to prepare it for the next day. Suddenly there was a loud noise. The door broke open and a bunch of policemen entered the room with guns pointed toward him. 

“It’s useless to make any attempt to flee Mr David. Surrender yourself. We arrest you for fraud at Anderson’s agency and running away with half a million. Surrender the money right away,” said the inspector sternly still targetting his gun at him. 

David was taken aback. He could not make head or tail of what just happened. Suddenly he tried to push the officer in front and run. The inspector with a gun was always ready. He obstructed him with his stretched leg and gave him a big punch on his belly. Then he jumped onto his back and made him lie flat on the floor. “Don’t try to run David, your Mia has come for you see.” David, now crushed under the weight of the inspector, could clearly see his grinning face.
