Nandini realized that someone was following her. She was on her way back from college. She turned back to check who it was. It was Rakesh from her class. She did not stop and continued to walk towards her home. Rakesh was one of the bright boys in the class. She had a smile on her lips. Next day the same thing repeated. Rakesh used to follow Nandini from bus stop to her house. It continued for almost a week. One day Nandini stopped and turned back. Rakesh was surprised. He started taking an about turn. Nandini called him.

“Hey Rakesh, Stop. Come here.”

Rakesh turned towards Nandini and came near her. “Did you call me?”

“Yes, I see that you are following me everyday. Is there something you want to tell me?”

“Well, no… I mean yes… I mean no..,” Rakesh was stammering.

Nandini burst into a laughter. She could not help but laugh at Rakesh’ innocence. This gave Rakesh little bit confidence. He also tried to smile a little.

“Well, Nandini, I don’t know why I come but everyday my legs inevitably turn towards this direction. I feel really good as long as I can see you. Your face makes me feel very peaceful.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yes, I swear. I really like you.”

Hearing this Nandini blushed a little.

This was the starting of their little love story. Almost everyday after class they would come back together. After dropping Nandini at her house Rakesh would go home. Rakesh was head over heels in love with Nandini. She was the most beautiful girl in her class. Many guys had a crush on her. Rakesh felt lucky that Nandini chose him over everyone. Soon at home Nandini’s parents got to know about their love story. People around their house started talking about them too. Nandini’s mom called her one day and told that they wanted to talk to Rakesh. Rakesh came to meet them on the agreed day.

“Son, we know that you are quite brilliant and have a bright future. But it’s very hard to be girl’s parents. We have to listen to so many gossips that are not very nice to hear. We would like to solidify your relationship. I know you are not ready yet for marriage but we want to perform the engagement ceremony for both of you. Otherwise you would have to stay away from my daughter. Is that OK with you?”

Rakesh had no option but to say yes. He said he will talk to his parents as well and tell them everything. Then the two sides can sit together and fix a date. Everything went as per plan. The two sides met and decided on a date. Rakesh’s parents were very happy to see Nandini. She was wearing a peach coloured saree and looked like a fairy without the wings. Both sides started the preparations for the engagement. Nandini was on cloud nine. She was lost in the dreams of their upcoming D-day. She would talk to Rakesh over the phone most of the time when she was at home.

One day her mom and dad had to go out for shopping. Her mom asked her to take care of the cooking. Nandini was on phone as usual. She was cooking very absentmindedly while talking over the phone. Suddenly her dupatta caught fire from the oven. Before she could realize the fire spread to her dress rapidly. When she came to senses it was too late. She was all on fire. She shouted out loud for help. She tried to douse the fire but without any success. Her neighbours heard her cries and came running. With lot of effort they could finally put off the fire but by then Nandini’s face had burnt badly. They rushed her to hospital. Doctor said she had 60% burns. Rakesh came running to the hospital. His whole world had shattered in front of him. No one was allowed to go near Nandini. She was still unconscious. He looked at her from distance and suddenly a shock went through his body. What an ugly face! How could that lovely face become like this? He could not sleep the whole night.

Nandini got back senses after 2 days. The moment she got back senses she wanted to see Rakesh. Rakesh came near her. But he could not look at that face. He turned his face away. Nandini felt a strong pain in her chest. She realized that she had lost everything. Rakesh stopped coming to the hospital after few days.

Milind was the junior doctor on duty. He could not but see the extreme pain that Nandini was going through. On the one hand she had physical pain of her body on the other hand her mental pain was tremendous. She had absolutely no will to live. In such a situation it becomes very difficult to treat the patient. Her condition was going from bad to worse. But Milind was determined. He would spend a lot of time with her telling some jokes or sharing some funny story. Slowly Nandini started to respond to the treatment. Milind made Nandini talk about herself and narrate her childhood memories. He did not want her to think about her college days. It was almost 3 months. Nandini had recovered mostly and was ready to go home. She was not completely out of the mental trauma but had become much sober. Milind was very happy with her recovery but he did not understand why he was feeling sad at the same time. He suddenly realized that he had started loving Nandini and the fact that she was going away was making him sad. Slowly he went near Nandini.

“I want to tell you something Nandini.”

“Sure Doctor, please tell me.”

“I cannot imagine a single day without seeing you. Can you please be my life partner?”

Nandini was taken aback. She did not know what to say. This was absolutely a surprise for her. Over the last few months she also had started liking this doctor. He was the reason she felt like living again. She had never thought that anybody would ever love her ugly burnt face again. Was she really this lucky? She did not know whether to feel happy or sad. Tears started rolling down her cheeks.

“Why are you crying Nandini? Don’t you like me?” Milind said anxiously.

“Oh no no doctor. I am just overjoyed. I cannot believe I am so lucky.”

“Oh Nandini, its me who is lucky to have got you.” Saying so Milind hugged Nandini.

7 years later…

It was Milind and Nandini’s 6th anniversary. Milind had promised to take Nandini to a movie. He was very busy with his private practice. He had become a very renowned doctor. But this did not stop him from planning some escapades with Nandini once in a while. He wanted to keep the romance alive as long as possible. They had a beautiful daughter of 4 years. She looked exactly like Nandini before her face was burnt. With some plastic surgery Nandini’s face was restored to a great extent. As Milind was getting late he called up Nandini.

“Why don’t you come over to my clinic? We will go directly from here. Otherwise we will miss the movie beginning. Sorry for getting late honey.”

“No problem at all honey. Anyways I am sitting idle at home. I will come right away. Tania is enjoying with her nanny.” Nandini was very excited and happy. Milind was the best husband she could ever have. He was a very good human being with a lot of compassion. Marrying him was the best thing that ever happened to her. She started for Milind’s clinic. Once she reached his clinic she saw that he was busy with a patient. She waited outside. After sometime the patient came out of his chamber. Nandini was startled, it was Rakesh. He had bruises all over his face and his hand looked fractured. Rakesh did not recognize Nandini. He just walked past her. Nandini entered Milind’s chamber.

“Sorry baby, this was the last patient. Now we can go,” Milind said apologetically and gave Nandini a kiss.

Nandini was still not able to forget what she had seen. “What happened to the guy who just left?” She asked Milind.

“Oh very strange case. He says his wife is very abusive and had attacked him. Most of us think that it’s the other way round and he is trying to cover up. A police case is going on and the woman has filed a criminal complaint against him in court. As a doctor I have no option but to treat. But why do you ask? Do you know him?”

“Just an acquaintance, nothing special.” Nandini said with a sigh.
