superwoman Gomathi
Gomathi amma was thrown out of her house by her daughter-in-law Srija and son Venu. Venu was just a puppet in Srija’s hand; everything was planned and done by Srija herself. After repeated pleas, she did not allow her mother-in-law to stay with them. Gomathi was already 65 years old and weak. She thought, where can she go? Who will give her a job at this old age? Gomathi lamented and went away. She sat near the banks of a river when Gopalakrishnan, her adopted son whom she used to look after when he was young, saw her and asked what the matter was. Gomathi told everything to him. He once thought and said, “Don’t worry, I will help you.” He built a small tent with coconut fronds and straws and gave her a few coconuts to sell. By this way, she had no need to depend on anyone for living her life. Gopala said the only thing was to sell coconuts, as it was an easy job, but first she should learn to peel coconut husk. With old hands, slowly she learnt. Starting, she had no energy, but later on she grasped the art of peeling coconut husks and cutting open coconut shells. Slowly, her business raised and thirsty travellers came around to her. Later, she expanded her business by bringing a sugarcane machine. By this way, her business doubled. She started her own little shop with cool drinks, and her first top drinks were coconut drink and sugarcane juice. She was no longer an old weak woman, but a strong inspiring woman, giving jobs to destitute women like her who were thrown away from family. She thanked Gopala and made him her partner in her business.
