Chapter 2:Birth

In the deep jungles of South India, Vishrava the son Pulastya and brother of the great Agashtya muni, was in deep meditation.

He heard a soft yet know voice calling his name. He slowly opened his eyes and saw Rishi Bharadwaja standing in front of him.

He was smiling seeing Visharva. Joy could be seen flowing in his eyes. Visharva didn't understand because he normally won't be like this, yet today was a little different.

(Bharadwaja rishi is one in Saptarishis< seven rishis> with Pulastya and 5 others)

Visharva touched Pulastya's feet and took his blessing and asked

"Munivar, it's a delight that you came to our Aashram. If u have given a Sandesh(message), I would have done some arrangements for your arrival".

Pulastya

" Son Visharva, it was not needed, I was just passing through this path and thought of meeting you"

" Visharva, I have something to tell. (he hesitates for a bit, takes a deep breath and continues) I was thinking that my daughter Ilavidha is now at the age to get married and I was looking for a groom who is well knowledged and handsome, what do u think? "

Visharva tells

"Sure maharishi, I will help you to find a fit groom for your daughter"

Pulastya burst out laughing and tell

" You are a very knowledgeable person and you have attended various kinds of power thru your Tapasya yet you didn't understand my clue did you?? "

Visharva gets confused, Pulastya pats on his back and says

" The groom will be none other than your Visharva. All the Gunas(Values) that I am looking for, you have them all and I have known you since you were a child then why should I look elsewhere. You are a perfect match for my daughter. I asked your father, he said yes but I wanted to ask you also, Visharva will you take my daughter's hand. "

It was all of a sudden thing for Visharva, he requested Pulastya for a minute of aloneness. He thought for a while and went near Pulastya and agreed on the marriage proposal.

Pulastya's eyes were filled with tears of joy, he hugged Visharva. After deciding the date Visharva and Ilavidha were married. After a year Ilavidha gave birth to a boy. He was named Kubera, who was in future assigned by Gods as the God of wealth.

Kubera wanting to rule was looking for a kingdom that was weak and could be obtained easily. Lankha fell into his eyes. It was well furnished with green landscape and was located between three mountains called Trikuta. The ruler of Lanka was a Rakhshasa(Demon)named

Sumali with his wife Kethumati.

It was an open kingdom yet hidden.

Kubera invaded the territory of Sumali and captured him. He overthrew Sumali and became the new ruler of Lanka. He gave Sumali and kethukumbi a place in his kingdom to stay.

Kubera brought his parents to his new kingdom. He had renovated the whole place. Every house, every place was decorated with ornaments like gold, diamonds colourful stones. It was a lookalike to heaven. But he forced all the rakhshasas to work as a soldier to his fortress.

But Visharva and Ilavidha were sanyasi and Sanyasini, they were proud of their son but didn't want the luxury. So they requested an ashram in the mountains. Kubera agreed and did as they said.

Sumali who got to know that Visharva was the father of Kubera, and he had a lot of power, decided to marry his daughter to Visharva. By doing this he would get protection.

Visharva was meditating in his ashram. His meditation was disturbed by some sound. He gets up and goes out to see what it was. From a distance he sees a pale figure coming towards his ashram. The figure was wearing anklets, as it was the sound that disturbed Visharva. As the figure comes closer Visharva's eyes open wide, his heartbeat starts to raise. It was a beautiful young girl. Who was perfectly built. She was chanting the name of shiva. She had no ornaments. She was dressed in khadhi saree, wearing rudraksha mala on her neck and on her wrist. She wore Mallige(Jasmin) flowers on her head. She was so simple yet perfect and beautiful looking women. She was Enchanting. The moment he saw her, Visharva fell in love with her.

He followed her to her home and discover that she was none other than kaikesi, daughter of the demon Sumali.

Even after discovering that she was a demon, Visharva still wanted to marry her.

Visharva goes to sumali and asks kaikesi's hand.

The plan had worked. Sumali knew Visharva would fall for his daughter, so he had sent kaikesi to make him fall in love with her.

Sumali didn't want a delay, he says

"Rishi Visharva, I accept your proposal, but there is one condition"

Visharva

"Whatever it is sumali, I will promise you that I'll do"

Sumali with an evil smile tells

"It's nothing much, you have to marry my daughter right away. Will, you agree"

Visharva hesitating

" But what about the date, time and all, don't you believe in that".

Sumali

"Yes I do. After 5 minutes there is a good time for marriage. I know this because I am an Astrologer ".

Believing his words, as per sumali's condition, Visharva married Kaikesi.

He then took her to his aashram.

The people in aashram were terrified by Visharva's choice. Seeing that Visharva had married another woman, ilavidha broke into tears.

Visharva holds her hands and says

"Ilavidha, forgive me as I married another woman without informing you. Even so I promise I'll love you as much as I love her", telling this he comforts ilavidha.

Years had passed, kaikesi had given birth to three children. Dashanana, kumbakarna and Shurpanaki . Visharva had left ilavidha for kaikesi.

Kaikeshi was a wholehearted devotee of Lord shiva. She used to perform puja, and preach about Mahadev every day.

Kumbakarna was too lazy and shurpanaki was very mischief, they would slack off in the middle.

But dashanana, would listen to her every word carefully. Her preachings were so effective that dashanana also became a devotee of Lord shiva.

Kumbakarna and Shurpanaki, we're pure demons, they loved meat. But dashanana was different, even though he was half-demon, he still looked like a normal brahmin boy. He didn't have any demon-like quality nor he looks like a demon.

He went to his grandfather Sumali to learn Astrology and fighting skills.

His father Visharva wanted to teach him Veda. As a human being, he had learnt only one, Righ Veda. So he poured his knowledge into his son.

But dashanana was not satisfied, his mind wanted more knowledge.

In Vedas to learn one type, it takes a lifetime to study and understand it deeply. But dashanana was a very bright student he completed it in only one year and started pursuing others.

He completed learning all the four Vedas(Righ Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Athervana Veda) just in four years of time. Righ Veda was thought by his father and the other three, he borrowed the scriptures from other rishis and learnt it all by himself. The news about the boy who finished learning all Vedas spread like fire thought out Trilokha. At the age of 15, he had achieved what others couldn't in their lifetime.

Even after gaining a ton of knowledge, he never disagreed with a word his mother said. Not an inch of ego could be seen in his eyes.

Dashanana had promised sumali to give gurudakshina after perfectly learning astrology.

Sumali had a cunning plan to execute using dashanana. He wanted to use his promise in a way benefiting him.
