War

War

The emptiness of the hospital room haunted her often,

The bodies of the dead soldiers were sent back one by one,

Nightmares of the war woke her up all of a sudden.

Ten years ago when she was a nurse at the nearest military station,

Bombs and bullets had killed each one adult and their little children.

Babies in their cradles and new mothers innocent,

Soldiers from the wars and senior adult citizens.

No was spared no one survived the hideous effects of war,

All over was Blood and flesh, cries of help, agony, and fear,

All kept ringing in her ears, all felt still so fresh and near.

Why did she survive she often wondered,

How did He spare her she tried to find the answer.

Until one day she received a letter,

From far off and yonder.

Your little grandchild is with us safe in our shelter,

Please take her away as we can no longer look after her.

Her son was a soldier sent far of land and farther,

Where he found his true love amidst the war and the slaughter.

Overjoyed she began her journey to meet her granddaughter,

Eager to find the similarities in the little one and her son's features.

As soon as she saw the cherub with a face covered with curls,

She knew it was her son's long lost precious treasure.

Gathering her in her wrinkled hands she hugged her,

And suddenly it dawned on her the reason why she was a survivor.

Thanking Him she carried home the little wonderful pleasure,

Now she could grow old with her life's priceless treasure...
