The Song of the Five Elements
The Song of the Five Elements
Before the birth of stars and seas,
Before the whispering of trees,
Before the moon adorned the night,
The universe awoke in light.
From sacred silence vast and deep
The Five Great Elements did leap—
The Pancha Mahabhutas grand,
The ancient soul of sky and land.
From them the mountains learned to rise,
The rivers found their flowing guise;
From them all life was shaped and spun
Beneath the watchful moon and sun.
And man himself, though proud and wise,
Is born beneath their endless skies.
His flesh and breath, his pulse and frame,
Are woven from their cosmic flame.
At birth they gather into one,
At death their sacred task is done;
The mortal body fades away
And joins the elements one day.
First comes the mighty Earth divine—
Prithvi, ancient and sublime.
She is the ground beneath our feet,
The patient soil, enduring, sweet.
In towering peaks and fertile plain,
In forest root and golden grain,
She gives all creatures strength and form,
A shelter safe through every storm.
Within mankind she firmly stays
In bones and muscles’ steadfast grace.
She grants the body power to stand
Like mountains carved by heaven’s hand.
O Earth, great mother calm and wise,
The cradle where all living lies—
Without your strength no life could be,
No root, no branch, no destiny.
Then flows the sacred Water bright—
Jal, silver dancer clothed in light.
She sings in rivers, rains, and seas,
And whispers softly through the breeze.
She is emotion’s tender stream,
The soul within each poet’s dream.
She bends yet never truly breaks,
And life from barren silence wakes.
Within the body too she flows—
In blood, in tears, in life she glows.
She cools the fevered brow with grace
And mirrors heaven’s shining face.
Without her touch the earth would die,
The clouds would vanish from the sky.
For every seed and every tree
Drinks from her endless melody.
Then blazes Fire with golden mane—
Agni, fierce sovereign of flame.
He dances in the stars above
And in the hearths of human love.
He is the spark of change and might,
The power hidden within light.
He turns the darkness into dawn
And bids the sleeping world move on.
Within mankind he brightly burns
Where food to living strength returns.
He fuels the heartbeat’s sacred drum
And keeps life’s glowing kingdom warm.
Without his fire all would freeze
In lifeless dark eternities.
For even thought and vision bright
Are born from Agni’s living light.
Then comes the wandering Air so free—
Vayu, lord of sky and sea.
Invisible yet strong and grand,
He moves through every grain of sand.
He carries fragrance through the flowers,
He shapes the storms and monsoon showers.
He teaches birds the art of flight
And fills the flute with music bright.
Within the body breath he gives,
The unseen force by which man lives.
He stirs the nerves, the mind, the soul,
And keeps all living systems whole.
Without his breath the lungs grow still,
The forests fade, the streams stand chill.
For every creature born on earth
Depends upon his sacred birth.
And last arrives the Ether wide—
Akasha, vast as heaven’s tide.
The boundless space no eye can hold,
More precious than the purest gold.
He is the silence deep and clear
Where stars and planets bright appear.
The unseen chamber of the mind,
Where wisdom, dreams, and thoughts unwind.
Within the body too he dwells
In hidden spaces, sacred wells.
He grants expansion, depth, and peace,
Where restless thoughts may find release.
Without vast space no sound could flow,
No soul could dream, no spirit grow.
For all creation must arise
Within Akasha’s endless skies.
Thus Earth and Water, Fire and Air,
With Ether vast beyond compare,
Together weave life’s sacred art
Within the cosmos and the heart.
And when the final dusk draws near,
Man leaves behind all pride and fear.
His mortal form returns once more
To those five powers revered of yore.
The flesh to Earth, the breath to Air,
The warmth to Fire’s glowing care;
The fluids unto Water glide,
The soul through Ether’s gates shall ride.
So let mankind bow low and see
The wisdom of eternity—
That all are born from nature’s flame
And all return from whence they came.
O Pancha Mahabhutas bright,
Eternal guardians of life’s light—
May your great harmony endure
While stars and seas and skies are pure.
