Love, Here's A Verselet For Us

Love, Here's A Verselet For Us

It was pre-decided by the elders, our union had been arranged.

You were a complete stranger, and I had to get engaged.

The nervous first dialogue had more embarrassment than words.

I still remember not knowing how and what to say!

Instead of sitting in a closed room, we took a long walk,

It was a breezy day and a light drizzle got us to talk.

Were the drops blessings in disguise from heaven?

I realize now; you tugged at my 'Dupatta',

And it was not the naughty windy rain,

as you said!

Next spring, I was at your place,

The wedlock had almost got settled.

We spent some time away on the terrace.

Brooding over my birthday present.

Looking into your eyes,

I suddenly felt complete.

They reflected a sheer honesty,

and serenity without a hint of sleet.

Time flew by swiftly and then arrived fall,

Before you came over again, my heart was filled with unrest.

I couldn't wait to lay my eyes on you,

And get scanned by your amorous glance.

Between us, a nascent love was maturing fast.

I still recall how you planted a little kiss,

our unforgettable first.

Thereafter a few more months whizzed by,

With lots of significant moments, I simply cannot transcribe.

How my heart longed to see you, over and over.

Staying miles apart was killing and so was being your lover.

I still remember those unending phone calls,

sleepless midnight conversations.

Life was barely hanging off a cliff,

and patience was simply draining by.

Fortunately then came the nuptial day,

and you were finally there.

I was prepared to be yours,

as you were to be mine!

Customs barred us from meeting,

yet our hearts were in unison.

I had to wait to hold your hand,

until all the ceremonials were done.

Across the hallway, I saw you approaching leisurely,

Robed in a garb, pure white in ’Topor’, 'Uttoriyo' and 'Dhuti'.

All the prattling around me muffled as you closed in.

In my mind, everything else was a blur, all I could discern was you.

My band of brothers lifted me up on a ‘pidey’ sturdily,

And I was asked to hide my face behind the customary beetle leaves.

The ear-splitting ‘ululation’ by the ladies in the banquet hall amused me

It suddenly dawned that I was about to become your bride tonight.

The rituals and mantras went on and on for hours,

As I loved the blessed smoke from the 'Havan' blanketing us.

A divine aura lit up and we were asked to sit close.

Way past midnight, we were declared man and wife.

You held my hand tight and I suddenly felt shy.

All the giggles in my head just wouldn't go by!

‘Gosh girl!’ I thought ‘Grow up! Be a wife.'

Life was soon to get more challenging and exciting.

Time whooshed by and much so against our will,

distances tore us apart once again.

We had jobs to do, across cities

located in two states, alienated wide.

Then came a turning point in both of our lives

We got to know that I was expectant.

I went cracked with delight and so did you!

Instantly, I left all behind, and rushed back to you.

Our home hugged us in and,

a baby would let us start afresh.

We finally lived like a duo,

in a wedlock, very close and tight.

Honey, all I have to say is that,

The life we shared these past few years,

Has proved forever it shall persevere.

I will love you forever in every way possible,

My love will remain constant, until my dying day.

Three little words to close this verse-let now, I love you.
