Long Distance
Long Distance

It was a long night.
It was chilly
And 'twas gently wet...
Was it the grey in the sky
Or the grey in her mind -
That the sky so silently wept?
The night was windy, the night was drunk.
But Who was drunk more?
The merry lot who toasted the weather?
Or She, drunk in his love?
Or He, drunk in her candor?
It was indeed a very long night
For them,
Who in vain Sought the tiny twinkling specs
In the vast grey.
But
Slowly the tired eyelids drooped
As the night faded - with
The foolish heart whispering a lullaby
Of dreams, hopes, and magic-
That ne'er seem to die.
