I didn’t find love; I found myself through someone

I didn’t find love; I found myself through someone

I had forgotten what it meant to dream,
not because dreams had ever left me,
but because life had taught me
to bury them quietly.

There were doors inside me
I had locked years ago—
not because there was nothing behind them,
but because there was too much.

A thousand unfinished wishes,
a boy I once was,
a man I thought I would become,
roads I never travelled,
and skies I stopped looking at.

I chose responsibility over desire,
silence over explanation,
and duty over the small voice
that kept asking,
“What about me?”

So I became good at living
without actually feeling alive.

I worked.
I provided.
I stood where I was needed.
I carried what had to be carried
and smiled when someone asked if I was fine.

And perhaps I was—

fine enough to continue,
strong enough to survive,
but never alive enough
to call it living.

Then, somehow,
you walked into my life.

Not as a promise.
Not as a destination.
Not even as someone
I was supposed to fall in love with.

You simply became someone
I wanted to talk to.

And somewhere between
ordinary conversations
and unexpected questions,
you began touching the parts of me
I had spent years avoiding.

You asked things
I had never allowed myself to answer.

And slowly,
the locks began to loosen.

Doors I had sworn
would remain closed forever
opened—not with force,
but with conversation.

And behind them,
I did not find the broken man
I had feared.

I found me.

The dreams were still there.

Bruised, perhaps.
Dust-covered.
Waiting patiently.

But alive.

You made me speak
what I had swallowed for years.
You made me name the things
I had only carried as silence.

And strangely,
every truth I spoke
made me a little lighter.

I began remembering
that I once wanted things.

That I once had ambitions
bigger than survival.

That happiness was not
some foolish luxury
I had forfeited forever.

And for the first time in years,
tomorrow did not feel like
another day I had to endure.

It felt like a possibility.

I started looking ahead.

Not because you gave me a future,
but because you reminded me
that I was still capable
of building one.

That is what you may never understand.

You did not change my life
by becoming a part of it.

You changed it
by helping me remember
that my life belonged to me.

And perhaps that is why
I am afraid of this connection.

Not because I love you
in the way stories usually define love,
but because somewhere along the way
your presence became a place
where I could breathe.

And I know places can change.
People can leave.
Conversations can become memories.

Perhaps one day
our paths will grow apart.

Perhaps you will not always be there
to ask the questions
that made me look within.

And that thought frightens me.

But maybe that is the final lesson
you have unknowingly given me—

I must not build my life
around the person
who helped me find it.

I must build it
because I found it.

So if someday
you are no longer beside me,
I hope I will still walk forward.

I hope I will still dream.

I hope I will still chase
the things I once buried.

I hope I will wake up
and choose happiness
without needing anyone
to remind me that I deserve it.

Because perhaps
you were never meant
to be my forever.

Perhaps you were meant
to be the light
that helped me find the door.

And now that it is open,
I finally understand—

I was never waiting
for someone to save me.

I was waiting
to meet myself again.

And somehow,
through knowing you,

I finally did.
