Said a branch once,

To a falling leaf,

"O' dear leaf,

O' dear leaf"

Up looked the leaf,

"Yes, father..."

"Should you really

 Leave me today, with

 The setting sun?"

"Yes, father I must.

 Don't be sad.

 Wasn't it you,

 Who taught to me,

 The ways of the world?

You and I never must forget

The beautiful working of nature.

I shall come again,

But you must wait for that time to come

In the spring,

As a new leaf

I shall come

My days are over for now,

And so is the spring.

It is my destiny now,

To go down the hill,

And meet the soil,

With a heap of my friends"

Those my friends,

Were the last words of

The yellow, crumpled leaf.

Before the ranch could react,

Downset the sun, and

Downset the leaf.
