A Doctor's Honesty

A Doctor's Honesty

2 mins

The sweet doctor Gerald Hey

Was quite happy about his pay,

And at a hospital worked all day.

Gerald’s beautiful young wife Mini

Wanted more and more money;

She hissed and snarled when the doctor called her “Honey!"

“Doctors with private clinics earn a lot;

You are a stupid clot;

In our old age, we’ll live in a Hindu mutt,”

This was Mini’s usual comment;

The doctor would cry and repent

And call his wife a serpent.

The foolish young lady rolled in luxury;

Gerald, who every month-end handed her his salary

Was compelled to live in penury.

Mini who longed to live in clover

Fell in love with an elderly carpenter,

Many times richer than the good-hearted doctor.

Douglas, the carpenter, an incarnation of evil,

Wanted to murder and kill

The doctor who was so kind, so calm and so still.

After dinner Gerald went to bed,

And having seen a dream he cried,

For he saw his erstwhile beloved Lynda who was now dead.

Gerald was chilled to the marrow,

When Lynda revealed with sorrow:

“Your second wife Mini and her lover Douglas will kill you tomorrow,

But I’ll let it happen never;

I’ll kill your wife and her wicked lover;

Then you’ll marry Judith, my charming sister.”

In the morning, Gerald was filled with consternation,

Regarded his wife with deep suspicion,

And thought of sending her back to her native place London.

But before he could tell his wife anything,

Mini said; “My dearest darling,

Henceforth I believe in simple living and high thinking.”

Though it was morning,

As a gentle breeze was blowing,

In his armchair, Gerald was again sleeping.

“I thought of Douglas’s children and his innocent wife,

Then I decided to spare his life:

I didn’t think it was proper to kill Mini who is only twenty and five.

My counselling has changed

their minds completely,

Mini will never behave stupidly;

Douglas has realized his folly.

Saying this again in a dream,

Sweetly did Lynda at Gerald beam,

And told him to have full faith in Him.

In a few days Douglas

and Mini broke apart

And Mini began to behave

Like Gerald's most beloved cat.
