In Indian culture it is considered that Maa Saraswathi herself resides in a book. Therefore, books are given a special place and treated with respect. In different parts of India they are worshipped either during Ganesh Chaturthi or Saraswati puja during Dussehra. It is believed that the students who keep their books in Puja during these occasions will do well in their studies.

All cultures respect and value books. Indeed, no educated person will undermine the value of a book and would not have felt longing for some book of his liking! A room without books is like a body without soul (Cicero) As Jhumpa Lahiri said, “that is the thing with books. They let you travel without moving your feet.

sonally, Pearl S. Buck’s,”The Good Earth” I read in my teens, left a strong impression on my mind. The hardship of a common peasant’s wife was very moving, where her abject poverty forces her to give birth to a child in the fields and soon after she returns to work.

“The only thing you have to know is the location of library, “said Albert Einstein. There is a memory about our institutional library strongly etched in my mind and fondly remembered by me. I am talking about late 80s and early 90s.There is a huge library in erstwhile Regional Research Laboratories (RRL) or presently Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT). There used to be and continues to be, a table at the main entrance to the library, which was designated first table. Every day precisely at 5.00 PM, all the scientific journals received on that day would be placed on the first table. All research scholars and scientists would be hovering around that table to have a glimpse and brief read on advances related to their research interest. The printed journals were the only source of information those days and rarely one could afford a personal subscription. They would only spend minimum time there as courtesy to others and come back later to read the details. Slowly the online subscriptions by the libraries and a variety of resources and searches gained popularity and became easily accessible and printed journals took a back seat.

Internet resources certainly made the lives of researchers and other professional simpler, as a comprehensive and exhaustive search of their area of interest was easy to perform and there was the assurance that the information was up to date and accurate to a great extent.

Books are always a pleasure to read. Many of us still prefer to spend our free time in a private retreat, with a book in hand. Books, indeed can be our best friends.

It is sad that the younger generation is missing out the pleasure of reading books. Of course, there are efforts to instill reading habits in youngsters and it should be continued relentlessly.
