I'm finally back in the classroom. I've got 211 students, no AC and the temperature has been 111, 108, and 106. I've tried Reynald's letter writing. I've received a few with some information in their letter. But getting most of the students to write anything was like asking them to move 20 tons of concrete. It was worth it. I had only one student who absolutely refused to do anything. I'm having trouble getting the kids to talk about anything. The school is mostly Hispanic. I've asked them for suggestions for decorating the classroom. Not much luck. Next class I'm planning on having them do a number puzzle that only requires knowing the order of the numbers from 1 to 100, getting them to work in groups. Not a few of my students are at the second-grade level in math. (I'm teaching algebra 1 and geometry this year.) They cannot do the work.

The school offers math tutoring after school, but the school busses leave right after school. The students are not allowed in the building until 15 minutes before class. Lunch is twenty minutes. I can recommend Kahn Academy, but many don't have access to internet at home. I get around to each student during class. A lot of my energy is just getting them to try to do the work. There's little time to help a student who can barely add, and can't multiply. I am open to any and all suggestions. Some of these students are really starting to regret that they didn't pay attention in previous years. They are smart, funny, courageous kids who want to make something of their lives. I want to help them be successful. With 33-37 kids in each class, I'm really feeling the challenge.
