The Last Person I Loved - 15
Dreams Bigger Than Us
After that call with her brother, I genuinely felt relieved.
For the first time, it seemed like our relationship finally had direction.
Her mother was slowly accepting me. Her brother was supporting us. My family already liked her.
So naturally, we started dreaming even bigger.
Now whenever we met, our conversations were no longer just romantic.
We talked about future planning seriously.
Savings. Career growth. Business ideas. Where we would live after marriage.
And honestly… those discussions made me feel responsible in a completely different way.
Till then, love for me mostly meant emotions.
Now it slowly started becoming commitment.
Around that time, she became busier with school and family responsibilities.
Still, somehow we always found time for each other.
If she got free early from school, I would immediately go meet her.
Sometimes we only got thirty or forty minutes together.
But even those short rides felt enough.
I still remember many evenings where I used to pick her up after school, take a longer route intentionally, spend half an hour roaming around, and then rush back toward my office.
Petrol was expensive for me at that time.
But honestly… being with her always felt worth it.
One evening during one of those rides, she suddenly said:
“My family wants me to try going abroad.”
For a few seconds, I stayed silent.
Not because I was angry.
But because I knew what that sentence actually meant.
Foreign opportunities. Better future. Better salary. And maybe… distance.
I asked softly, “What do you want?”
She looked ahead quietly and replied:
“I also want to try.”
Then after a short pause she added:
“If I settle there… convincing my family about us may become easier.”
Honestly? That logic made sense.
And because I loved her blindly at that point… I immediately replied:
“Then do it. I’m with you.”
That one sentence changed many things.
Soon she started preparing documents, applications, training details and everything related to the process.
And slowly… without even realizing it…
her dream started becoming my dream too.
One day she suddenly asked:
“If you come with me later… everything will become easier.”
And just like that, my overthinking brain completely disappeared.
Next week itself, I applied for my passport.
Till today, I still remember standing in those long passport office lines thinking:
“What exactly am I doing?”
I had struggled for years to build my career.
Engineering. Job hunting. Interviews. Low salaries. Stress.
And now suddenly I was preparing to leave everything behind for another country.
Still… every time confusion came into my mind, one thought defeated everything:
“She’s there.”
That was enough for me.
Within a few weeks, I got my passport.
First passport holder in my entire family.
Honestly, that felt like a huge achievement at that time.
Later, I even met the same agent handling her process.
He interviewed me briefly for communication and English speaking.
And surprisingly, he appreciated my English.
Meanwhile, I had already started imagining a completely different future.
Different country. Different life. Different struggles.
But together.
That “together” part was the only reason I was even considering all this.
Then one evening, while returning home after meeting the agent…
something inside me suddenly became heavy.
For the first time, logic entered my emotional world properly.
I kept asking myself:
“What are you doing?”
“Are you really ready to leave your career behind?”
“You struggled so much for this field.”
“Will you actually be happy there?”
And honestly… deep inside, I already knew the answer.
No.
I loved her endlessly.
But I wasn’t made for abandoning everything blindly.
The next day, I finally told her honestly.
I explained everything carefully.
My career. My struggles. My confusion. My fear of regretting the decision later.
And then I softly said:
“I don’t think I’ll be able to come.”
For a few seconds, she stayed quiet.
Then instead of getting angry, she replied very calmly:
“I already knew.”
That answer surprised me.
She continued softly:
“You worked too hard for your career. I don’t want you to leave everything unwillingly.”
Honestly… that maturity made me love her even more.
Then she asked one question that stayed in my heart for years.
“Will you wait for me?”
I looked at her and replied immediately:
“Always.”
And I genuinely meant it.
At that moment, distance didn’t scare me.
Time didn’t scare me.
Nothing scared me.
Because I trusted our love completely.
Maybe too completely.
