Tea With Little Sugar!
Tea With Little Sugar!
I am not sure that the characters and incident mentioned in this story is only imagination. Some parts of the story may be real!
All that is left of him is in my memories as he left my world and “the world” altogether.
When they shifted to this city, I started working as a maid at their place. I still remember the day their school-guard contacted me and asked if I were willing to work for them.
“How much will you pay?”, I asked, to which he replied: “3000 rupees a month, tops.”
I remember telling his wife that I won’t be willing to work for 3000 to which she said that they will be giving me a raise soon after I started working. Well, that never happened; as I never asked and they never did. He used to return from work at 2 pm and I would wait for him. Though it wasn’t tea time, I would still prepare tea for him. He began to like tea that I started preparing for him with little sugar instead of sugar-free tea. He preferred to be at home on Sundays so he offered me to learn some computer skills and English spoken skills. He was the principal of a school and would stay with his wife at that residence.
One fine day, his wife assigned me a lot of work to do in her absence, such as moping, cleaning, and cooking too, as she had to go to her native place. so, I started coming early in the morning and was late to return home as he would return around 4 pm these days. People at home began to call for these delays. My husband never came to this place as he had remarried another girl.
This Sunday, I came a little early, he was still on the bed and I offered him some tea.
After completing my household work I asked him to teach me English and some computer skills. I was emotional that day and asked him not to leave the town. I wanted to come very close to him today, knowing that he is an elderly person to me and there is a big age gap between us. suddenly he stood up and said that he has to go office to complete some work.
Next morning his wife returned and thanked me for taking care of her home and especially of her husband. The very same month they left the place to take up a new job and left me jobless. I tried a lot to fetch a job but failed to get one. So, I requested his wife to provide some references so he referred me to one of the residential school and I was kept as a cook with a monthly salary of 10,000 rupees. However, it did not turn out to be a long-term solution for my problem as cooking for one person is quite different from cooking for 80 people! Adding to that, most of the workers in the school were wicked to the bones. They tried to touch me while at work and it was as soon as three days after my appointment that a worker came to my house at night and asked me to walk to the mess with him and serve him dinner {I said no, of course}.
This incident definitely sent shivers through my body and I decided to return to my parent’s house.
In the meantime, I forgot to mention that during these 3 days my husband called and abused me over the phone. He asked me to leave this job. This man never supports me financially but tried to control my movements.
I got a call from ma’am today and came to know that Sir is no more.
Heart is broken by this, here I sit, writing this and thinking to myself:
