This is a true story of what all I have gone through during my childhood days in the village I was born. The name of my Village is Assolna.

It is a tranquil village with scenic beauty. My mother had married my father against the wish of my Dad's mum that is my grandmother. Soon after marriage, my mother had to undergo a lot of stress and issues which my grandmother raised for unknown reasons. After a year of her marriage, my elder sister was born and things were going on as normal in my parent's life. In the following year I was born I too was a girl child . My mum told me when I grew up what exactly had happened during my birth. My grandmother and my dad had accompanied my mum to the hospital for her delivery so after I was born the nurse came and gave the news of my birth to both my dad and my grandmother. On hearing that another girl was born she was very upset and she started howling and wailing saying that was why God had given her son two daughters. My father was shocked at the way things were turning out there were many people in the hospital who came out of the room where my grandmother was to check on her and why was she crying so badly. The first thing that my dad did was he told her to pack her bag and that he would put her on the bus to go back to Assolna . He then told her that it is his daughter that was born to him and he was proud of me and he open heartily accepted me . During my growing up days I did make my father proud by winning laurels in all that I undertook. My father would proudly introduce me to his friends and family saying that I was a carbon copy of him. In this story what I want to put across is that even in educated households girls were not welcomed in the village during my times Everyone would celebrate the birth of a son but cry when a girl was born. I was very hurt and sad when my mum narrated this incident to me.

I would like to put across a message that we should treat both boys and girls as equals. They are God-given children which parents and grandparents should accept with an open heart and open mind. We need to make our boys know that they should as and when they grow older and marry that boys and girls should be at par and accepted in society. My bitter experience is often told by me to my students in the School where I teach so that they can arrive at some consensus.
