Reborn
It was the dead of the night. The warden stepped over to Medly where she was merrily whispering songs behind bars. He handed over an old, rusty envelope that said, "READ ME".
Medly said, "Nothing else. Just 'READ ME', what nonsense. Where has the letter come from?". The warden came forward and said importantly, "From the police." She kept the letter under her bed. The sharp sunlight hit her face the next morning. She tilted to take her toothbrush and toothpaste when she decided to give the envelope another try. She pulled out the envelope when she was just about to flip into the basin but controlled her balance.
Then suddenly with no warning, she started to beat her head in disbelief. She said to herself, "I did not even open the envelope!" She opened the seal and died away with a sigh. Her stay at the prison had been extended to another half a month. She was about to tear it and throw it into the garbage bin when suddenly she saw the date -- 20th November and started jumping around in the prison dress. The warden came and started beating his stick on the bars as though it was his drums.
He said, "Don't you know your punishment has been extended to half a month?"
"Yes, I do"
"Then stop knitting and start knitting jumpers."
"Sir, you mustn't have seen the date -- 20th November, and today's date is 6th December. 15 days and 1 day in addition. How about thinking twice?" Hearing this the warden became shocked. He opened the bars and snatched the letter from Medly's hands and, again, he became shocked as ever.
It's been half an hour since the warden came to know about the letter. At this moment, Medly was standing at the gates of the prison. The warden handed her a generous tip. She took a four-wheeler and dropped at the house nearest to the prison. Everyone thought that the house is haunted and abandoned. But instead, it was owned by a famous gangster. Medly sneaked inside and fell on something huge and useful. It was a bag full of bandit items.
And before the gangster could have the slightest notice of her, she vanished out of the window with the suitcase full of bandit items. And the next moment, she found herself struggling in the gutter. When she set herself free, she said, "Today is the first day I robbed a robber, and that too, for tools and accessories."
She started walking towards her apartment. Once she reached there, she changed herself into a very new-fashioned garment and walked over to the nearest jewelry shop. There, she asked the receptionist to hand over a 24-carat gold necklace worth 50K. The receptionist said, "We don't keep such costly items in our jewelry shop just because the greatest number of people don't buy such items." Medly with acerbity and alacrity, remarked, "I want that necklace in my hand tomorrow sharp at 7 pm." The receptionist hesitated.
On the way home, she felt like a real superwoman !! when suddenly, she fortuitously fell into a wonderful black ditch!! and spoiled her nigrescent garment. She was full of dudgeon. As she was going, she went past a launderette and thought to clean her clothes there. The old waiter sitting on a chair stood up and laid an osseous hand on the table.
He said, "What is it?"
"Of course, laundry."
She almost fell back when she came to know that there was no changing room. She suggested that she would do the laundry. The waiter happily agreed and said, " 5% Discount ". Medly happily thought, "All laundries in the world must be like this one." Medly finished her laundry and went back to her apartment. She did not forget the suitcase of bandit items.
The next day, she spent most of her time roaming around and exploring her old and faded room, in the apartment. Most stunningly, she is the only person living in the whole apartment all by herself. At some time in history, it was an apartment full of people. However, Medly was unaware of this. There was a lot of stuff in the house, but it was all thrown by Medly into the dustbin at the corner of the room.
By the way, with time, it struck 6 in the broken clock though it works perfectly to date. Medly took a piece of paper, cut it with a pair of scissors into a very irregular shape, and started writing something on it with a pen that she found lying on the floor. Then, she went down the road to the jewelry shop and asked for her order. The receptionist showed it to Medly and asked for the money. It was kept in a burglar-proof glass chest. Medly went to the door, opened it, and after a few moments, it closed again. She again opened it. And this time, she grabbed the chest containing the necklace and ran away before the door closed. The receptionist shouted, "Thief! Thief!" He ran towards the door and the door closed on him. He ordered the guards to catch her with a potato on his head. Before the situation got worse, Medly fled and dropped the piece of paper she had written at 6 o'clock.
When she reached home, she almost broke down about how to open the chest. She finally remembered about the suitcase and broke it open in from of her violently. She credenced that it would help her in safe-breaking. She took the pipe cutter, wood auger, pliers, and wrench and started digging into the lock, but of no use. After that, she took out the deadliest tool on her list -- the chainsaw. She cut notoriously and puerilely through the lock and smashed the chest with one blow. And from there, into her hand, emerged a very precious golden necklace from the chest. She thought that with the money she would get from selling the necklace, she would buy a very luxurious and trained dog.
The next morning, she talked to a gold dealer and sold the necklace at the worth of 100K. She went home and saw the newspaper to find out that a gold necklace worth 50K had been stolen. And most astonishingly, the police had started this case. The detective in charge of this case was Howard Bruce with an ideal estimation of 50 men with him. She didn't care about the news and decided to instantly make preparations for going to Washington as she pellucidly knew that she would get a worthy dog in Seattle.
Till evening, everything was packed for a journey of one or two days. As she was about to leave, she remembered about the news and took a nigrescent veil.
All the thoughts and exclamation died when she heard the police siren. Hearing it, she went from the front yard of the house to the backyard. The police arrived at her house, and she saw the person she had to avoid -- Howard Bruce. She saw that he was a black-colored man with a black Nehru cap on his head and he looked very serious. Medly felt enmity for him. In her house, there were no windows except in the rooms. There were no windows on the staircase.
The people were walking up the stairs. She thought that it was a good interval and also an opportunity. She fled to the open gate and left it just as it was, after getting out of the house. She arranged for a car. She got into the car and closed the door with a bang. The car dropped her at the Seattle station after 20 minutes. She saw her Washington Bronze Express 11 waiting for her. She engaged a potter to safely place the goods inside. After she made herself cozy in her bed, she started listening to pop music with her headphone and iPhone 11. She was almost going to fall from the bed when a man said, "Dinner is served." She opened her eyes and saw a waiter at her bed. She told the waiter to pass on.
She went to the basin and plunged her face into the water with weary eyes. Medly walked over to her bed where her porridge was shaking most terribly. She took the knife and fork in her hands, feeling a little weird about Washington's tradition.
The next morning, as it was breakfast time, Medly walked over to the waiter addressing him for a hot apple pie. After 10 minutes, he stood right before her. She took the apple pie and started munching carelessly with her half-red eyes. The beauty of Washington mesmerized her as she looked out of the window. It was 10 am when she was dozing off and just after some time when her mobile phone sho
uted 11 am, she got out of Washington Brone Express 11 and set out for her house. She had already contacted the owner of her newly rented house.
She engaged a tonga driver -- Washington's traditional ride to take her to her house. Just as she sat on her cozy seat, she addressed, "37 Sent Paul Street". Medly jumped off the ride after 15 minutes and headed toward her house. She was happily astonished that her house was none other than a five-star hotel.
She went inside the house. It looked like the house she had seen in photographs and movies related to rich people. However, it is her house now, at least for some time. She went to the reception counter to order a plate of pizza added with some extra cheese. After she ate her food, she went out for buying her dream dog, very luxurious.
She went to Kerry Park where there was a dog exhibition. She looked over the place for the best dog. The best breed she could find was Poodle. She contacted the dealer and made a deal of 30K. She went home happily.
The next morning, she got up and said, "Ah! A brand-new day!". And propped herself up on the pillow. Just then the bell rang. She went to open the door with her drowsy eyes and striped pajamas. A carelessly packed parcel had arrived. She said, "Who send it? and what is inside?" The postman said, "How do I know? I am not the owner of this parcel or the delivery boy of a company and....and.....". She slammed the door on the postman. Just as she was going to brush, she heard something move and looked behind. Everything was nice. She brushed her teeth and wore nice clothes. She took a razor and cut gently through the packaging. Just as she opened it, she saw the poodle. There was a letter along with it as well. It said, "Frisky".
Medly exclaimed, "Frisky? Maybe it suggests its name. Frisky!". It was sleeping then. It woke up after some time. The dog cheered up when Medly called it 'Frisky'.That night, when she was sleeping, she saw Frisky looking at her. She got scared, got up, and walked over to Frisky. She said, "You must sleep at this hour." Frisky was going to bark but controlled his temper. She went back to bed. At midnight, she woke up, and with a heartbreaking wail of terror, she shrieked. Frisky also opened his mouth as he too would like to scream. Then she stopped, blinked her eyes, looked around, and got up. She said to Frisky, why are you looking at me? I was terrified." Frisky at last closed his mouth and sighed grieve. This went on for many days till medly was fed up.
She went to the dealer the next day. She saw him talking with another guy. The dealer went into the tent to bring something. In the interval, Medly asked the other person, "Are you acquainted with him for a long time?"
He replied, "Yes".
"My dog, Frisky looks at me all night. Does he have a sleep disorder? I asked the vet, but he said he was all right."
"Frisky!" the man exclaimed. Medly saw tears come to the man's eyes.
She asked, "What is so pathetic?"
The man said, "Listen! Once there was a man named Jimmy who bought this dog. He kept his name Frisky. Many days later, Jimmy faced financial losses and had to sell Frisky back. That night, when Frisky was sleeping, the man sold it back to this dealer. That's why he looks at you all night so that you don't do the same."
The dealer came back asking, "Why are you two in tears?"
Medly turned back hiding her tears.
She rushed home and kicked on the door so violently that the handle almost came off. She stared at her carelessness and opened the door. She hugged Frisky. All this time, alone at home, Frisky was thinking that this time, his master was kidnapped, and not him. "I will make you coalesce with your master once again!!", said Medly. Frisky looked happy. Medly went out searching for some esculent food for Frisky.
She reached a pet shop and asked, "Dog food?"
The man said, "50$".
Medly asked, "What is it?"
"Biscuits".
"45$"
"I have commiseration for you!!"
"Commiseration?"
"Use your lexicon."
She left with her 45$ dog food.
As Frisky ate it, Medly grabbed her phone and called the dealer. She addressed the dealer that she wanted the contact details of the guy that he was talking to that morning. The dealer applied for the same. She went through the contacts and came to know that the man's name was Jimmy. She called him and asked for his address. The man replied. Medly, that night, slept with Frisky and he closed his eyes, miraculously. He was relieved.
The next day, she followed the address. "49 Sent Paul Road...", murmured Medly. When she reached the address, she was surprised to see that it was no one else than the person she had talked to, yesterday in front of the dealer's tent. "How come the man gave your address."
The man at the door laughed at Medly's puzzled face. He said, "You have reached the exact spot." Medly became more surprised and realized that the man was Jimmy himself.
After a lot of discussions, they finally came to the point that Medly will sell the Frisky to Jimmy. Medly took the money and went home. She called the dealer that she wanted another Poodle.
He said, "What kind?"
She said, "Anything -- not just secondhand." She ended the conversion and started packing items. The next day, again she was woken by a postman and a careless parcel. "Whoever, however, whatever it looks like, its name will be 'Shadow'. And I expect that there is no letter inside."She opened the parcel and was struck by a letter. She opened it and read, "Shadow". She was dumbfounded. She blinked at the golden-haired dog who just woke up from the sleeping pad that had been given free of cost with it. She silently kept the letter in the box.
Then, Shadow dropped the TV remote in front of Medly to get her attraction. Medly grabbed him and walked out of the house with her merchandise. On her way to Seattle, she was driving a car. She was drinking water when a turn in the front was coming nearer. Beyond that curve was a huge trench. Shadow barked but Medly ignored. Suddenly, she realized she was falling, and then, BANG!!!!!!! Luckily, Shadow was safe. He barked his most pathetic bark.
Hearing it, a very familiar man appeared. Medly whispered as if she said her last words, "It's you -- Ho...Howa.....ho....".
Then, when she opened her eyes, she found herself in a hospital. She said with a dry mouth, "Where am I? Who brought me here?".
"Here is the person who saved you".
Howard Bruce walked in with an expression that he has done a great job. But Medly could jejunely remember him. She had forgotten almost everything.
He got a house rented for her after a week. An old man also lived there. The next day, when the old man was crossing the road, a huge truck came in his way. Medly ran and jumped toward the old man and pushed him far aside. She fell between the wheels. The truck passed over her and she was saved. The old man was in tears and held both of her hands and thanked her heartily.
Howard noticed all this. After a few days passed, suddenly, he pulled her toward a parade. He told her to stand on the stage. And with no warning, everyone started clapping. A man named Tom Wolf, the then-governor of Philadelphia, handed her a huge trophy, a medal, and a certificate that said Nobel Peace Prize. He asked her to say a few words. She said, "Thank You all very much for honoring me and considering me qualified for this prize".
And the narrator recorded the last few lines of Medly --- They say, "I am Reborn".
