Pappu’s Class

“Hur –hur dabang dabang dabang” Pappu

“Hur –hur dabang dabang dabang” is the ongoing chorus of all children.

The class monitor shouted, “All in Bhramari position, all of you sit in bhramari (a pranayama to enhance concentration power) position.”

Few children followed it while rest of the them were enjoying singing “Hur-hur dabang –dabang –dabang.” Pappu was the main singer and also a dancer. The class monitor continuously shouted resulting in a few other children to become volunteer monitors.

There was an undeclared competition of shouting and everyone wanted to win that competition so were participating whole heartedly in it.

Suddenly, the majority of the class was silent and stood at their places. Only a few were shouting who were oblivious to Ms. Neeta Gambhir’s (their English teacher) presence in the class.

Pappu was still dancing as he was not aware that the strictest teacher had entered the class.

Then the class witnessed the loudest voice/scream of Ms. Neeta Gambhir. Unanimously, the shouting competition was won by Ms. Neeta Gambhir (through wild card entry).

A curfew ensued.

Immediately Pappu who was the mischievous element of the class was sent (most of the times he was out of the class. In exceptional cases, he remained inside.)

“All of you will keep standing for the whole period, this is your punishment. Now take out your English note book and start writing in your notebook. Be careful there should be no mistake and writing should be beautiful otherwise I will cut your work and you will have to write it 5 times”, declared the teacher.

The children started copying and continued copying for the whole period. In the whole period, few children were slapped, few were made sit on the floor and Pappu was still standing outside and then the period got over.

As soon as Ms Neeta left the room, the children became so happy that they restarted their competition (last time Ms Neeta won the competition through wild card entry option, this time we will see who wins?)

Pappu entered the class. He was quiet this time because he was feeling tired, he just wanted to drink water and sit on his seat. Somewhere in his heart he was feeling bad this time, he wanted to complete his English work, his partner had gone to washroom so he took his notebook of English without permission and tried to do his work. In the meantime, his partner returned and as soon as he saw his notebook with Pappu he shouted, “How dare you to touch my notebook, you thief!” then he tried to snatch his note book but Pappu kept his hand on his notebook. Again he started shouting and crying,” Pappu has torn my notebook.”

Poor Pappu, he became helpless and did not even defend himself for he clearly knew that no one would trust him.

Then a teacher entered the class and all the students started shouting, “Mam, Pappu has torn Shikhar’s notebook.” Someone even said, “he stole his notebook.”

Suddenly Shikhar said, “Mam, he has taken my new pen also that my uncle had brought for me from Japan.”

The Math teacher Ms. Neha was very loving teacher, she called both the children and tried to get the details.

Pappu was quiet whereas Shikhar was continuously blaming him, “Mam he stole my notebook and new pen, when I saw my notebook he tore that but he is not giving my pen.”

Other children also supported Shikhar and showered a number of blames on Pappu, “Mam, he has a habit of stealing. He stole my computer book also.” other one said, “Once he stole my eraser also.” and so on the blame went on Pappu.

Pappu felt as if he was the worst student of the school and everyone was against him.

Teacher scolded the other students and asked them to keep quiet.

Then she asked Pappu, “Tell me the truth. I will not say anything to you, I will not punish you, if you have his pen, even by mistake then you can return it to him.”

Still Pappu was quiet.

The teacher again asked, “Pappu if you don’t say anything then you have to go to the principal and then I won’t be able to help you.”

Pappu didn’t know what to say, he knew that no one will trust him. The teacher also wanted him to accept his so called theft and return the pen (which he didn’t have) so she could teach the class. Though he knew that he has not even seen his pen, then too he kept quiet.”

The teacher again said, “I am asking you the last time otherwise I will send you to the Principal’s office.”

Again he kept quiet and then the monitor of the class took him to Principal’s office. Pappu’s parents were called and they were warned (in the form of an undertaking) that if he repeats his such behavior, he would be suspended.

His parents pleaded to the Principal and promised to give the pen to Shikhar and Pappu will never repeat such behavior.

By that time the bell rang and the school got over.

Pappu knew that next few days will be very difficult for him at his place. His parents will continuously scold him. His younger brother will make fun of him. He will not be allowed to play, or watch television.

He went back to his place with his parents.

In staff room __

Ms. Neha said, “I was not able to teach a single sum in class V-B. I don’t know what kind of boy is Pappu, he is an intelligent boy but neither he wants to study nor he will let others study.

Ms. Neeta continued, “There is a method which you may follow. I send him out of the class as soon as I enter. He has to stay out for the whole period.”

Ms. Neha said, “Without any reason.”

Ms. Neeta replied, “Oh! Neeta, please don’t talk to me like this. I am intelligent enough to create a reason. “Saying this she laughed as if she had made some discovery of the decade.

Ms. Neha continued, “Hmm, but I felt today that he was not guilty. I don’t know why?”

Ms. Neeta replied, “He always is. By the way what happened today? Why do you think so?

Ms. Neha continued, “Shikhar of class V-B was saying that Pappu had stolen his pen but Pappu neither accepted nor denied, he didn’t even say anything. The Principal called his parents then also he was quiet, his parents.”

Suddenly Ms Neeta interrupted, “Wait, wait, what are you saying Shikhar’s pen, but Shikhar himself gave me his pen for writing. My pen was finished in their class and on this he gave me his pen and I forgot to return it to him, how careless he is.”

Ms. Neha shocked in horror, “Oh no!”

Then Ms. Neha rushed to reception to make a call to Pappu’s parents.
