My Diamond Ring

Yesterday he removed all my complaints- taking me for a candle night dinner and giving me a diamond ring as a gift. Wow! My joy knew no bound. Happiness reached seventh heaven.

But only then my inner housewife raised her head ... "What was the need to bring such a great gift? I used to be happy even when you brought a rose."

He was not less smart. If it is so then I'll return the ring and bring a red rose for you.”

"Hey you brought it with love so why should you return?"

The brightness of the ring was visible in my eyes but the dilemma was how to show this ring to all the colleagues of the colony. If I tell by myself, then everyone will think that I try to show off. It may be proper if they ask me and I tell them. I got a chance. This Saturday, there is a kitty party in Kamini’s house where everyone will be there and such a thing will not escape their notice?

Then came Saturday, when I got very well dressed wearing my diamond ring and reached the party. Today, I was in a different color. I used to put my hairs behind my ears, sometimes put my hands on the legs, sit in different style, touched up my nail polish just only to show my ring all the time. The whole party was over but no one asked about the ring. After coming home and being complacent I started blabbering, "They must have been jealous… why should I care when I am happy. Let them be jealous.”

After a few days, I got another chance to show the ring to everyone. We had to go to a wedding. Well, nowadays it is not safe to wear costly jewelry and go to the wedding. So I used all artificial jewelry, but I could not escape the temptation of my diamond ring. We reached the marriage hall where I left no chance to show off. The function was over and at night we started to return back home on the bike. As soon as we reached a dark and deserted spot, two persons blocked us on the way and put a knife on my neck. They asked me to remove all my jewelry and cash.

Their mood was off finding all my jewelry artificial. Tightening up their grip on me, they started asking my husband to surrender everything

Getting scared for life he told “ Please take this diamond ring. Except this, we don’t have anything costly. Allow us to go.”

Well, we could manage to save our life and reach the colony safely. The news had spread the colony like a wildfire. Next day there was a huge crowd.

Everybody enquired about the incident and I started narrating them with tears in my eyes that thieves took my costly diamond ring. I started thinking as to what all I did to attract the ladies attention to display the ring but now I was to give such bad news. But this incident had a strong impact on me.

Throughout the day I looked at my ringless finger and regretted. My husband could not see me in that condition, so he came to me and consoled by telling,” What have I hidden from you? You know our condition. I do not have so much money to buy you a diamond ring. I had brought an artificial ring to keep you happy, which we have lost. If God wishes I shall buy you a real diamond ring. So don’t regret the loss so much".

I still doubt whether he was speaking the truth before, or now.
