‘No, I cannot’ she said this loud and clear and rushed out of the restaurant. After all what was it that she refused. Arunodaya was not able to understand why her life was taking such twists and turns. Was it playing with her emotions or was it giving her another chance? She was confused and left without bidding goodbye. Dayanand was ready for such a reaction and hence did not say anything. He let her go because he understood her emotions.

Twenty six years of her happy marriage had come to an end with the slow encroaching killer disease that took away the love of her life. There after she had lived. Yes lived alone, childless. That was the only gift of life that was not bestowed on her. But she had no regrets. An ordinary lady, fair skinned with a lovely smile ….a face that is too sweet to be forgotten. After so many years too she had not changed. Her simplicity still cannot be unnoticed. Her life had lost the sunshine and the brightness was covered with dark grey clouds of untold pain hidden in those smiles.

Arunadaya started cursing the day she accepted his friend request. She shouldn’t have found him. It is not that they did not know each other. There is this little or rather a very short period of love that had captivated both. It could be called as a distant love as they never met personally ever but exchanged those tender feelings through the eyes. Thirty years ago he refused because he was worried of his ailment which he could never disclose. He loved her but wanted to see her happy too. Why then has he appeared after so many years? His message set her heart racing. She could feel her beat. It was the same feeling when their eyes met first.

Is she avenging the refusal done years back? She had no clue. Her mind and heart were at war. She was still and this stillness was suffocating. Her predicament was what her relatives would think about her falling in love with a man who she had totally kept out of mind and suddenly from nowhere he appears. How would they react to her decisions? Arunodaya cried in her room most nights. He gave her space to tackle her emotions and called her again. Very calm and composed, he explained to her that it’s fine. He understands her dilemma and would not chase her to accept his proposal.

After several days of the incident he called her if she was feeling better. He wanted to see her smile. It was this smile he would die for. He told her it is alright not to get engaged in a formal relationship but there is no harm in being friends and taking this valuable relationship to the grave. It is her smile that brings all of his hopes wrapped in a package of happiness. He said his love for her will remain unflinching, unchangeable and most respected. His mere motive was to be a companion for her till life separated them. Life had truly given a second chance to her miraculously. He does not believe in forced relationship. There was absolutely no problem even if she did not say yes to marry him. He would still want her to be happy. He slipped away silently with subdued emotions. A man who was single then and single now would be no botheration to the world with his first and last love in his heart and soul.
