Back In Time But Not Back In Life
Back In Time But Not Back In Life
"Aira,” Shibhu said smiling excitedly. Aira felt the clutch of his hands on her arms, even before she registered that she has arrived. She smiled back with excitement and bewilderment, making sense of her surrounding while wanting to take a good look at him at the same time. Both of them were divided in their attention towards each other and towards Aditya. “Aditya,” she said instantly, releasing her hold on Aditya’s palm. Shibhu instinctively bowed slightly and stretched his arm. Aditya shook hands with him, while he hesitated for a moment, thinking of the fact that Aira had put in the chip in his palm, the first time he shook hands with her. Aditya’s attention was divided too, between his surroundings and Shibhu. Shibhu knew he immediately needed to get rid of the Positioner tag. He eased out his handshake, bowing again, looking apologetic that he could not pay due attention to Aditya. He turned his gaze to Aira “Aira, there is trouble. First get this thing out,” he said turning his back towards her.
Aditya looked around, trying to figure out if he really is back in his own time. He felt thrilled, as he slowly looked around, searching for clues of familiarity. His heart raced when he noticed something. He nearly ran towards it, trying to see it more clearly in the half moonlight. “Ruka!” he said as he got a better view of it between the mangroves. He knew, only Ruka could have driven through the sands of this deserted beach. He leaped faster to reach it. Placing his hand on it he called out loud, “Ruka!” “Hey, Aditya! So good to hear your voice after long!” came an elated response, which he bent forward to listen. He bent even forward and kissed it. “Love you too,” came the response. He smiled and patted it as he straightened up. He made a slow, full scan of its body, and breathed relief as he saw it completely intact.
He looked at the sea and took slow deep breaths, feeling the cool breeze touch his face and listening to the rustling of waves. When he felt composed, he looked back at Ruka saying “show me the news from the last four days. Readout whatever is there, about me. Just the headlines.” “Aditya’s private work station Vyom in splinters. The family says he was there at that time.” came the voice. Although he knew what had happened to Vyom, his heart broke when he heard this. It seemed more real now. “Next,” he said. Ruka read out a series of similar headlines.
“Go to the next day,” he said. “Okay, here is a headline from five June 2021. Aditya and Super Bike Ruka missing from the site: Investigation Report” came to the response. “Damn it!” he said and read the full article and all other similar news items of that day. He looked up and processed the news, as the images he just saw flashed in his mind.
“Go to the next day,” he said hurriedly. “Six June 2021: Aditya’s family held for questioning. Accounts seized.” A chill ran down his spine as things panned out as he feared. He frantically read all that was available and looked intently at all the images of his family.
His eyes welled up. He felt his mind jammed with the processing of all the news and the building anticipations within himself. He spoke to himself in a trembling voice “I am lost. I can't get back. I am lost forever...I am back in my time, but I am not back in my life. I cannot just get back into my life..”
