An Accidental Reader

An Accidental Reader

I became a bibliophile accidentally.

When I was in 6th grade, we had a period called Library every week twice. I remember this because I hated it. They would make us sit beside a long mahogany table in the huge library at our school and make us read. The books were distributed at random. And I never read any of those which were given to me. One fine day, when one of my classmates was absent, her book was handed to me because I had finished pretending to read the book I had. I made an effort with this one because it had a pretty cover, and soon found myself asking the librarian if I could borrow this book and take it home because it would be an agony to wait till next week to read more of it. I finished that book the same night. Not only was that my first novel, but also the start of an obsession and undying love for books I have today. That book was Heidi by Johanna Spyri. And as of April, 2019 I can boast of being an owner of more than 300 books and having read more than that. I have a typical reader where my mother complains about not having enough space for so many books and my father who buys me more and more books, and a shelf that is overflowing. As a reader and a writer, I live under the constant pressure where I struggle to write more than I read, and end up with some or the other novel in my hand, with my pen lying somewhere I don't even know.

And it is to this day, that I think about the fact that so many years ago, my classmate was absent and that her book was given to me. I couldn't imagine a world where I hated books-- and I am pretty sure, neither can anyone else who knows me.
