Happy Birthday To You!
Happy Birthday To You!
You told me once, I still remember it
In that happy epoch, now so distant
That your birthday fell on a particular day
The fourth of December, if I am not wrong!
Think about it - I was born on a fourth day too.
That should have made us two of a kind
If only he had other plans for us, you see
I would belong to you and you to me...
Alas, this was not to be, but what can one do?
Instead, let me wish you a Happy Birthday
One full of the things you love the most
Now, let me try guessing some of them
Those sweetly melodious English songs
I still remember their very words and verses
I used to think, they carried a secret message
Perhaps some expression of what you felt for me.
Oh, the fool I am! Why should I dream of this?
Why yearn for something which is not mine?
Just this idiotic, fickle heart of mine, you see!
It just cannot seem to remember to forget you
Or your silence, impenetrable, unbreakable
Sealed with that most beautiful of smiles
Or those eyes, not too large, not too small
That could speak volumes but still reveal nothing
I wonder if you will ever read this poem
It will be lost in a storm of birthday wishes
Letters more loving, tender and passionate
Cards more beautiful to behold than mere paper
Words chosen more wisely than my poor grammar
Warm embraces taking the place of my own desires
But if it does find you, this poor tribute of mine
I do hope, at least, that it makes you smile.
