Elephant in the Room

This is a poem about the time

When the family of the boy I loved

Came over to talk about marriage.

There demands and expectations

Were laid in front of my parents.

Although I sat there,

I didn't have a say in the biggest moment of my life.

Eventually, the marriage did not take place

Because I was not okay with my father footing the bill.

Just because I am a girl and just because this is how it is done in our "society",

It doesn't make it right
