Black and White

She struggles to sleep.

The blacks of her eyes staring through her eyelids to the white ceiling,

The ceiling bends away from the bed, disgusted by its dark frame,

She sits up.

Reaches for the light switch

And the pale walls recoil.

The room seemingly expanding and expanding,

Leaving her grasping at air in the gloom.

She swings her feet onto the black floor and stumbles around,

Trying to reach the walls veering endlessly beyond the room, 

Leaving the sinister, shadowy villains snickering at her lightheaded scramble.

She gives up and tumbles onto her bed, the inky strands spilling onto the bleached pillow.

She drifts into sleep,

And the walls drift away from the floor,

The cushion away from hair,

Moving infinitely in an alliance of asleep and awake, good and evil,

Black and white
