I tried so hard to be perfect for you,

I became quiet like a sheep,

Only speaking when asked,

I never dared to raise my voice at you,

Or smashed any glass when I was upset.

I bottled my anger and swallowed my emotions,

I killed the curiosity to take care of your children,

I buried my dreams into a black, cold ditch;

Never bothered to sneak out at night, 

Always told you where I was, and came home on time.

I stayed away from intoxicants of every kind,

Locked my virginity into a cellar and kept it in check,

I made sure that not a drop of dishonour ever fell upon you,

I stopped smiling thinking it was not my right to be,

Never questioned anything you demanded of me,

I kept my head low so you wouldn’t feel threatened,

I became the woman you wanted me to be -

A tamed one.
