A Shared Silence
A Shared Silence
Between us lay no empty air,
But language only two could bear,
Each hush a bridge no eye could trace,
Each pause, an unclaimed meeting place.
I write to you by lamplight's hush,
No answer sought, no need to rush,
For certain as the turning tide,
My words arrive where hearts confide.
Not hand to hand, but deep to deep,
Where truth requires no vow to keep,
Our quiet was a secret shrine,
Where love, unspoken, stayed all mine.
I hear you louder in the dark,
Than any voice could leave its mark;
I feel your soft smile bend the air,
Your steps beside me, unaware.
No noise is love's necessity;
Just two hearts crossing silently,
On some far edge no map can show,
In time that has no way to go.
So silence built its own wide land,
No walls, no witness, close at hand;
Proof love speaks truest when it's stilled,
And blooms in blanks the words left filled.
