Episode 18 of the conversations between Yogita Pant and Anil Chawla continues with the meeting where Maharaj Dashrath publicly meets Ram, Laxman and Sita. After the harsh words of Sumantr, Maharaj instructs Sumantr to order the army to move with Ram. He also orders for all women who earn livelihood by dancing and pleasing others to move. Further, he orders all traders, prominent men and women as well as sportspersons and many others to accompany the army. Royal treasury and wealth are also instructed to move. This infuriates Kaikeyee. She protests, but her protests are turned down. She quotes the example of an ancestor who had expelled his son. Siddharth, the minister, replies with clear facts about the circumstances that forced the ancestor to expel his son. Kaikeyee’s persistence with her protests infuriates Maharaj Dashrath who now declares his intention to move to the forest along with Ram.

Ram now puts his foot down and refuses to take anyone along. He asks mother Kaikeyee to instruct her servants to bring old clothes that they could wear on the way to forest. Kaikeyee is excited and herself brings some used torn clothes. Ram and Laxman wear the clothes. Sita hesitates. Ram helps her wear the rags. Seeing Sita in shabby torn clothes infuriates everyone present. Everyone is in tears. Maharaj Dashrath is also extremely angry and sad at the same time. Ram retains his calm. As Ram bids farewell, he requests his father to take care of his mother Kaushalya while he is away.   (Ref. Chapters 36-38 Ayodhya Kand, Shreemad Valmikiy Ramayan)
