She looked at herself in the mirror and gave a coy smile. She was wearing a blue top and a pink floor-length skirt. "Not bad", she told herself. 'Blue' was her favourite colour and today was a special day.
Jhanvi had come to Mumbai a couple of days back. She was here to visit her sister in law who had come from London. She had to travel back to Pune this evening. Unexpectedly, a new plan had come up. She was to meet an old friend at the railway station. Her heart skipped a beat as she thought about meeting him after twenty years.
She had met Chris when they were fifteen, at an inter-school competition. The moment she looked at him, she could sense a spark. It was love at first sight. She could still remember her heart beating like a super fast express. Even though they never met again, they had enquired about each other's whereabouts.
Years later they had connected through social media. Chris had recently shifted from Delhi to Mumbai. She had casually mentioned to him about her visit to her sister in law's place. He had agreed to meet her at the railway station.
As she waited anxiously, she felt a tap on her shoulder. He looked just the same....a handsome man now. She could see the happiness on his face but his eyes were sad. The next half-hour they spent talking about their lives. Jhanvi told him about her husband and ten-year-old son. Chris mentioned that he had got separated from his wife recently. As the train pulled to the station, they hugged each other and bid farewell. "Thanks a lot for meeting me today", Jhanvi said with moist eyes. "The pleasure was mine", he replied with a smile.
As the train pulled away from the station, her heart felt heavy. The rest of her journey, she kept thinking about how her life could have been if they had spoken twenty years ago. "Could it have been for the better?" she asked herself.
She would have definitely made it better...for Chris....she thought....
