As a child I loved to listen to ghost stories. I know it sounds strange but it’s true. My dad’s younger brother who lived with us for a couple of years would often tell us some spine-tingling tales about the paranormal experiences he had at his village. Being an avid reader, in my teenage years, Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ fascinated me the most.

After our wedding, my husband and I shifted to a quaint little town in Gujarat. My husband and his family previously lived in a palatial bungalow which was a few kilometers away from the place where we currently stayed. One fine day we visited his old bungalow which was located inside an elite colony. It was one of the most elegant houses I had ever set my eyes upon. The person who had bought the house from my father in law was an ex-army man. He lived along with his caretaker as he had lost his wife a few years ago. I was impressed by the garden which  was adorned with ornamental plants and had a few shady trees. It had an old Victorian look but something about the house felt a little spooky.

We were warmly welcomed by Col. Nair who took us into the living room and asked us to make ourselves comfortable. I glanced around and noticed that the living room was furnished in an old fashioned manner. There were two flights of wooden stairs that ended on a huge hall on the first floor. I could see an old wooden swing in the hallway. The house was similar to the ones I had seen in old horror movies. The caretaker was a grim faced old man who looked scary at first sight. He offered us some coffee which we gladly accepted. Meanwhile my husband and Colonel uncle were busy exchanging pleasantries. In some time we returned to our home.

That night as we retired to bed I asked my husband why they had sold their house. “It’s such a splendid house. I would never have parted with it” I said with gleaming eyes. It was then, that he decided to tell me a few incidents that occurred in that house which had forced them to sell it.

My father- in- law had been transferred to Kutch and would visit home once in two weeks. My mother- in- law and my youngest brother- in- law were the only inhabitants of the house. Since my brother- in- law also spent most of the day at college, my mother in law was left alone most of the time in this mournfully quiet house. Whenever my husband called home, his mother would complain that she could feel the presence of ‘someone’ in the house. He would dismiss it by saying that it was just her imagination. My husband who was doing MBA at Delhi had come home during his semester break. He had the habit of watching movies late night.

On one such night as he sat in the living room and scrolled through the channels, he felt a strange presence. He turned around and his eyes fell upon a ghost figure standing on the stairs and looking down at him. He froze in his seat, as sweat beaded on his forehead and the next minute the figure vanished into thin air. He was petrified and took the opposite flight of stairs and ran to his room. He spent a sleepless night thinking about the mysterious figure and the next morning he discussed regarding the eerie incident with his brother who claimed to have had an almost similar experience a few months back.

One day as he and his friends sat on the first floor hallway and played video games , suddenly they noticed the swing in the living room downstairs began to move on its own. He along with his friends were scared out of their wits but he said he chose not to speak about it as he knew his mom would be scared and he didn’t want her to fret.

Within a year they got an offer to take over an electrical agency in Kerala. My mother- in- law was more than happy to shift back with her husband to Kutch and they decided to sell the mansion at a not so profitable rate.

As I listened to my husband’s ‘hair-raising ‘ tales I was relieved that I didn’t have to stay in that ‘ so called’ haunted house.

Ten years later, we visited Kerala during my son’s annual vacations. My in- laws lived in a magnificent villa. As always, my husband was busy and chose to stay back at Gujarat. One late evening post dinner, me and my mother- in- law were sitting in our living room watching a movie and my son was in his room playing games on his gadget. The kitchen and dining area was visible from our living room. All of a sudden, I happened to look into the kitchen and I saw my son near the fridge. I continued to focus on the movie and a little later, I went and asked him casually if he had gone to the kitchen to drink water. His answer left me bewildered. He said he hadn’t moved from his place. My face went pale and I went back to my mother- in- law who was still immersed in the movie and narrated to her regarding what had happened. She listened to me patiently and said, “Many a times I have felt the presence of that boy in this house. But he’s harmless. He has never caused me any trouble till date. Once I even felt like he patted on my hand while I was sleeping.”

I listened to her open-mouthed and from that day onwards began to believe that paranormal activities do occur. It's up to you now, to BELIEVE IT OR NOT……………..
